For the record, you can get a pretty decent b5s4 out of the US for around $10k.
this is an oxymoron . and also 10k you will be limited to first replenishing the car . Heater core , bushings , chain tensioner , the list is huge ,everything really that dies on a 15 year old b5 (s4 is included you pudding loving fan boys) . And then you will be left with like 5k. well the paint will be **** and car will be rusting . (shush fan boys the b5 is a terribly protected shell and you can hear them rot on a quiet night). So now you are down to about 1500 (if you find a really cheap body shop ) so congrats you can almost buy wheels . or sell car for 4000. now you have 14000 , buy a mk4 gti and coils and wheels . or a b6 a4 same thing

really? i'd have to disagree. actually being someone who has bought a car out of the US they're actually not in that bad of shape.
i bought my car knowing full well i'd have the engine out in under a year, but when i did take things apart they were actually in very good shape. no leaks, no messed up turbos, no leaking/broken heatercores, etc.

being a two time member of the more money than brains club on both my GTi and current s4 avant i know exactly what it looks like when you take the value of the car and dump it back into the car in modifications. no one doing so expects to get that money back, but thats not the point. i could have spent $25k on a new car, but that new car wouldn't be 400hp and a ton of fun. i bought a less expensive car with modification ability exactly because i know i'd spend money on mods and make it fun to drive.
if you do it right it's no less reliable, will still have most if not all of the creature comforts the 25K car would have, and be a lot more fun to drive.

YES, its nice to get into a 2012 golf and drive around in the winter. yes its nice not worrying about things and having a warranty, but no it's not the be-all end-all.

Plus i do find it hilarious that some of the more vocal people in this thread are culprits for dumping stupid amounts of money into their own past project cars.

Are there better platforms than the b5A4 to sink 10K into? yes.
Is spending silly amount of money on modding cars a bad decision? yes.
                is it fun? yes.

I'm going to have to gree with Anrew on this one, you will never see what you sink in into the car not matter the year, my current s4 is a us car (California) with absolutely no rust and no signs of any on the way... Paint is in good shape and will only be better after I have a chance to polish it this summer and has got through this winter with outs a hiccup, if the car is built right with good quality parts it will be reliable, if You take shortcuts that's a different story, drive a stage 3 s4 and you wont want Anything else.... I don't get all the hate Chris has towards this platform.

great so if you want to spend a ton of money to go fast and have an old car yes s4 is win . they can make tons of power .My years of chasing power and wasting money is only good to people if they listen to the advise . and i promise 10k in a b5 a baller ride it will not make.

If you don't already own an S4 or a TT, you will be lucky just to get a good condition car for $10g so any of your back and forth is pointless.
Spending $10g on a car you already own gives much better results then a car you have yet to buy.

Like most have said, sell the A4, and spend all your money (maybe leave 2k for wheels/suspension) on the nicest car you can get. You will get way more enjoyment out of that. Thats certainly my plan for whatever my next car is... but then again Ive already had to learn from my mistakes.
Truer words have never been spoken. I have put so much money into so many different cars from Mustangs to Range Rovers it took me a long time to learn my lesson.

I stopped at FrankenTurbo on my A4 and that already I sometimes regret. It's a nice car, it's a fun car but it isn't fast compared to a lot of the domestic guys I've been at the track with.

If I had it to do all over again I would have just stuck with coilovers, wheels and a stage 1 tune and put the rest of the money into a RWD sports car of some sort that doesn't eat all my money.
