225/40/18 is within 0.5% of the stock 225/45/17 tire sizing. 829.3 Revs per mile vs 832.9 Revs per mile
ya the 225/40s are perfect 235/40s (1.7% taller) will work but 225/45s are too tall (25 inches vs 26.3iinches). edit this sorry these are (25" vs 25.9")
I usually just search on ConsumerReports for my winter tires. I start at the highest rated and then just go down from there until I hit a price point that I'm happy with. You usually don't have to spend a whole lot to get a really good winter tire. In fact, the best performance winter tires usually aren't a whole lot better than the worst. The best tire models usually perform better on dry and wet pavement in addition to snow and ice however, if you don't push your car that much in the winter months... you likely won't notice the difference.
As has been stated above already, the width of tire you're running (ie. narrower = better) will dictate your snow/ice performance more than the actual tire.
Finally, for reference... I have Pirelli Sottozero 240 Series II on the RS4 and Goodyear Ultragrip Performance on the R32. I'm exceedingly happy with both sets of tires.

I can't say enough good things about the Nokian WR-G2s I had on my Mazda 6 GT. I'm sure I will be buying them again for the Jetta when the current tires are ready to be changed.
They are a great tire because:
1 - Low road noise
2 - 80,000 Km warranty - you pay the difference if they wear out sooner
3 - (-20) in the morning with snow, +20 in the afternoon, rain in the evening, and ice at night? - it runs great on all the above conditions

Ya i have the Nokain WRs on my factory Avus 17s winter setup, great tires just that they are down to 5/32 . Hard tire to find in 18" though and the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R are impossible to find.
Thanks for all the input. Went with 225/40 18 Pirelli Winter Sotto somethings. I now have a full set of 17" factory Avus with Nokian WRs (5/32s-7/32s) left. If anybody is interested.
