- I have a 1998 540i E39 auto. Here's what happened: I tried starting the car with the battery drained, it cranked as usual, it almost started, and died. I put the jumper cables, I left the battery charging for a while (the battery is almost new) but when I tried starting, nothing happened. There is no click at the starter, all the lights and alarm/door opener/remote work normally. I tried hitting the starter with a hammer, I checked all the fuses I could find, none seems to be blown. Any relay, could the problem be the EWS? The starter usually fails but it clicks when the solenoid goes. Please advise asap, I am selling the car - the alternator went 2 weeks ago, changed that, now this....with 3 buyers calling to see it.
