    so after a few months of looking for just the right s4 i have finally found one that caught my eye, now what should i be looking for when i test drive the car? ive heard these V8s go through some oil is that true? what should i be excpecting for oil consumption, ive driven these cars before so i know what they should feel like, but i cant say ive had any experience with the car aside from that. Ther car has less than 100k on it and seems to be in mint condition, the owner has all doumants for maitnance exetra dating back to purchase from what i understand, i just want to make sure im not going to run into a bunch of headaches once the car changes hands so give me all you got.

    V8 S4! Is the car bone stock? Have a look at the records the current owner has. But for sure I would have it in for a PPI at Tunedub and in that you'd want a compression test (or if your really feisty a leakdown). Common pain in the ass stuff to look for in the records are starter, flywheel, fuel filter.

      also to look for:
      valve covers tend to leak, and can be an issue.
      motor mounts are a pain.
      fuel pump is a common problem, and can be heard before startup. check to see if its the original filter.
      chain rattle at startup.
      Mine had very little oil consumption, but if i was buying again, i would do a leak-down for sure.

        - Ask about oil consumption, I think 1 qt per 3000 miles is the Audi "normal usage"
        - Compression test for sure.
        - Valve Seals are also troublesome (and expensive to replace), so paying close attention to white/blue smoke from the exhaust on startup or engine braking is a good idea.
        - Turn the headlights on during your test drive, ballast/bulbs can go bad and give you a "dipped headlight error" (although I have a set of B6 ballasts that I mistakenly bought, so I can give you a smoking deal on those)
        - Chain rattle on startup is big as mike mentioned
        - See if the coilpacks have been changed out under warranty (common issue)

        Frequent oil changes and letting the car warm up before getting aggressive is important, so try to get a feel from the owner on that.

        Then gut your pre-cats, get a catback and a JHM tune. Turns it into a different car.

          100K it's almost guaranteed to have startup rattle. Oil maintenance is the biggest thing for these cars. If they are only changing at 10,000km and putting Castrol in, I may be nervous.

          3rd gear synchro is expensive. Try a lot of 2-3 shifts and make sure you don't feel a slight grind at all.

            alright guys, bringing this back from the some what dead, going to go test drive another unit tomorrow, so far i haven't been impressed by what I've seen, but this one is a us car 05 with 120km on it, car comes from California (which doesn't bother me) never winter driven, 2 owner (first owner was a Audi mechanic down in the states or so he says) talked to him about engine condition he says that there is no oil consumption at all i know there is no way of telling the truth of this till i actually drive it for a while but i will be doing (if we strike a deal) a compression and a leak down test, asides from whats listed above which anything else i should look for or tests i on the drive, if the car is as clean as he states it is this may be the one.

              Jonathan, what about another step up to the RS4? I was considering the S4 myself, but I just thought hey what the heck, might as well go all the way if I'm on the B7 platform. Just a thought.
