  • 87 octane.

I was not thinking and put about 20L of 87 octane into my B5 S4 Stage 3 (RSS’s old car)… the check engine light is on now which I would assume is a misfire. Any suggestions on corrective action? Octane booster?

Does the software not have knock detection that will adjust timing if knock is too high? Assuming a 60l tank, just fill the rest with 91 and that should bring you up to about 90, and that shouldn't make a difference because there is differences in blends out there anyways. Did this happen as soon as you turned the car on? Did you not screw the gas cap back in fully?

      Re: 87 octane.

The Motronic ME7 ecu will adjust accordingly for up to 12 deg of timing.

Not the end of the world. Cram your tank full of 91 and you'll be alright.

Octane Booster won't do much if anything just fill it up with the highest octane you can find.

                  Re: 87 octane.

Toluene has an octane rating of 114 I think so just do the math on how much your mixing it with and your desired Octane Rating.

(Didn't know they carried it at Home Depot tho)

Edit: Always pre mix your Toluene with the gas outside your car don't just dump it in the tank.

Roger said everything that needs to be said!

Home Depot has Toluene is the paint remover/acetone section. $16.99 for a tin...

                        Re: 87 octane.

                        Kenney Bell recomends the following:

                        "OCTANE BOOSTERS
TORCO - Torco Octane Booster (Accelerator Race Fuel Concentrate) can be purchased in 5 gallon 610 oz containers for $138. That’s $.22/oz which adds $.17/gallon (3 octane) or $.34/gallon for 7 octane. Only $120-$240 for 10000 miles of big HP gains and lots of fun. 16 oz in 20 gallons is 7.0 octane. Note: Increasing the ratio above 32 oz in 20 gallons does not provide increase beyond 7 octane. When comparing octane boosters keep in mind that some advertise “octane POINTS.” It takes 10 POINTS to make one octane. Torco doesn’t contain any lead or alcohol.

LUCAS - Our other recommendation is Lucas Oil’s “Octane Booster” which nets approx. 3 octane in 20 gallons. It contains MMT (Maganese Tricarbonyl) and is the best of the MMT boosters."

The lucas stuff is at crappy tire for $12.00/bottle and the torco from VP $30/32 oz can.

                          Re: 87 octane.

I myself have never been an octane booster kind of person it's just a lot safer/easier/consistent to run race gas. Race gas does cost a **** load but half the octane boosters out there are pure ******** so its a game of Russian roulette half the time.

As metnioned Toluene is an Alcohol and will dry your **** out that's why you pre mix before adding so it doesn't eat away at your car/tank/hoses etc.

                            Re: 87 octane.

I've never seen toulene at home depot, although it is on their website. they do have acetone though.

I've been mixing my own fuel for years and have an excel spreadsheet calculator if anyone would like it let me know. a few drops of baby oil in the mixture will help prevent too much from drying out too.

Home Depot at Chinook had it a few weeks back... right beside the acetone.
