  • TPMS: To be... or not to be?

For those of you that don't already know... I was finally introduced to my first "four-ringed" vehicle back in December of last year. After years of searching for the right Audi to occupy my garage, I finally found her... and right here in Calgary which was nice. Although my lil DBP R32 doesn't stretch her legs as much as she used to... she definitely looks up to her new big sister... a 2007 Misano Red RS4.

After 3 months of ownership, the TPMS warning came on telling me that a tire was low in air pressure. Of course, me being me, I instantly cursed the system and said WTF! That's crap. However, upon arriving home, parking the car and checking the air pressures... well... I'll be damned. The driver rear was down 5 PSI. Upon further inspection... I had picked up a screw in my travels. Well La-di-freakin' dah... Thanks TPMS. A trip to Kal-Tire and before I knew it, I was back on the road.

However, now... a few months later... I have the dreaded TPMS Malfunction. I've diagnosed the problem down to either a damaged sensor or a sensor who's battery has finally went dead. Either way, one of the sensors on my current set of OEM wheels with winter rubber needs to be changed out. As I understand it, this means about $100 for a new sensor, plus labour and install to remove wheel, remove rubber, install sensor, re-install and activate. No idea what the total damage is there... but I'm guessing somewhere in the $100 to $200 range.

Aside from that... I'm the new proud owner of a set of Rotiform BLQ's which will likely be installed on the car this week. This is where my conundrum starts. Although I like and appreciate TPMS (when its working) when it isn't... it seems to be a royal pain in the arse. Personally, I'm the tire pressure nazi... as I swear I check my air pressure twice a week. I'm not certain, but I also understand that installing TPMS on a new set of rims is around the $600 mark. Again, if they last 6 years... I suppose that's only a $100 a year. Not bad if the technology works I suppose. However, once you have 2 sets of wheels with TPMS installed... I'm not sure how it works for switching between winter and summer's during every season change.

So with a sour TPMS taste in my mouth I went to the internet. It wasn't hard to find several folks who had gotten sick and tired of dealing with pricey and less than failsafe TPMS sensors. In fact, some have actually went so far as to disable the "TPMS warning" light on the dash with a VAG-COM using the following procedure:

Select -> 17-Instruments -> Adaptation -> Channel 61. Subtract 512 from whatever value you find there.

    Interesing. Very interesting.

Anyhow... that's the back story. Here are my TPMS Questions:
    1. If I have TPMS sensors installed on 2 sets of wheels, how does that work? Can I still switch between tire sets myself in my own garage and reset the system... or do I have to go to a dealership or whatever to de-activate the TPMS wheels coming off and activate the TPMS wheels coming on?
    2. For those of you that have TPMS (sensor version) and multiple sets of rims... what have you done?
    3. If I listen to my wife who says ("F*ck that TPMS sh*t. $600 to tell you what you should see and feel is a waste of money!") Gotta love my wife! Would anyone be able and willing to help me de-activate my TPMS and warning light with a VAG-COM?

Thanks in advance for your responses and more importantly... for reading my lengthy story!

      1. Yes you can, in your gauge cluster you should be able to switch between Summer sets and Winter sets, use your stalk and scroll around. Some Audi's are in the cluster, some are in the navigation display.
      2. Switch from one set to another every spring/fall for my customers, reset on dash and off you go.
      3. I have VAGCOM here at the shop, don't mind giving it a try if you think you have found the correct procedure to disable them. I also don't mind helping you make sure they work 100%, scan them all for you and show you how to change them in the spring/fall if you wish to keep them. They are a good feature if you have a wife/friend driving your car, they will pay attention to the light when it comes on but won't go out and check your pressures before they borrow your car.

Alot of people wish to disable due to frustration and lack of knowledge. You are religious with your tire pressures so I would say once you get new sensors in your new wheels and replacement sensors in your winter set with dead batteries currently, you will be fine. Tire Pressure changes with temperature and that is the #1 complaint from customers when the winter seasons hits, "my light came on this cold morning" then you have to explain PSI drop due to temperature and they normally understand, fix it and never have the same issue again.

Ive got a B7 and 2 sets (OEM winter/summer) with TPMS..got some new summer wheels for this season and I got them without TPMS(I support the train of thought your wife follows haha). While I haven't thrown them on yet, from what Ive read, you can change it though the MFD as explained above

On-wheel TPMS sensors are no good, and expensive, if you can disable them and just not have it I'd do that.

As Bart said they have moved away from that system on newer cars.

Wheel speed system still has almost as many issues as the TPMS based system, without the extra sensor. It "should" be a lot better but both systems have their faults.

GM was using wheel speed years ago, about time Audi starts doing it.

What are the faults with the new system that you've seen Jay?

I had the old system on my B7 S4 and besides having a sensor fail and needing replaced I never had an issue with them at all other then when a tire was low. I drove the car year round and saw some crazy cold morning and never once got a false warning code.

I really liked having the system, the couple of times it did go off it was really nice to know. I could not tell by looking at the tire that it was a little low at the time.

My B8 has the new system, but it's not activated, I really miss it and next time I'm up in Edmonton I will have a buddy code it on for me.

ya the new s4's have the right ecu, but it's disabled because it's not required in canada, however in the US tpms i think is required.

here is how you turn it on for the S4: http://audienthusiasts.com/VagComABS.html

Re: TPMS: To be... or not to be?

Glad to hear that I can swap between sets and enable TPMS myself. I do know how to do the reset you speak of. It's through the stalk in one of the trip computer menus on the RS4.

If the cost isn't too bad... getting a new set TPMS'ed doesn't worry me that much. If anything, I'm more worried if my current set of TPMS sensors die 1 at a time... a few months apart. This would be 1 massive headache and 4 royal P's ITA! In the end, I'd likely just assume that the initial sensors were installed at the factory and now... being 5+ years later... they're all going to go very soon. As such, I'd likely get the current sensors all replaced at the same time to save the hassle. Problem is... now I'm essentially TPMS'ing 8 wheels at a cost of $$$.

At my guesstimate of $600'ish x 2 = $1,200... I'm having a hard time finding the value there. Besides... my wife is pretty car-savvy. We have 2 cars with stick-shifts mainly because of her. (I was fine with a C63 AMG. Her... no way.) And letting a friend drive my car. Haha... that's funny.

Definitely leaning the TPMS Disable route for the moment. Anyone have a Ross-Tech HEX+CAN or equivalent to try this out one of these evenings? I've heard the e-Bay jobbies won't work. Not sure if that's true or not.

Re: TPMS: To be... or not to be?

                        Mike,
Most of the faults have been on BMW's wheel speed system, faulty readings from ABS wheel speeds (this was BMW's determination, they had to buy this car back in the end). The car would consistently throw a TPMS light when the Tire Pressures were within .5psi of each other (confirmed by 3 different tire gauges and 2 TPMS tools) this would sometimes be on first roll in the morning, sometimes work good all day then throw a light, sometimes you could never get the light off. Quite the aggravating for myself as I don't like any customers coming back numerous times with lights and I especially don't like to be "wrong" when everything is correct and "should work" but in this case I was happy the dealer found and confirmed the issue without too much of a stink and they took care of it for him. Other BMW's seem to be SUPER sensitive to pressure changes, leave the car in the cold with the sun on one side of the car and you might end up with a light, funky stuff like that.

                        bart,
                        Nice find!!

                        Deuce,
HEX+CAN here, I was thinking of sticking around the shop on Saturday and work on my Nissan, want to play with it then? Do you have a good instruction set? If the instructions look like a 10-15 minute thing, come down any day this week and we will do it anytime If they look like 30 minute or longer jobs lets tackle it on Saturday when no one else is around to distract me

Thanks Jay, have you heard anything similar on Audi's version?

I haven't seen or read anything on guys having issues with the new system. All the complaints seem to be on the sensor system.

Nothing for new Audi wheel speed issues "yet", we all have a good feeling for how long Audi/VW electronics last for though

EDIT: I don't think many issues will come for the first years that they release them unless someone under-engineered something, more like 5yr+ mark once stuff gets lots of years of use, km, heat/cold, abuse, wear & tear, that's when electronics start to get brittle and problematic.

I would be interested in seeing the failure rate of B6/B7 ABS sensors from the factory or how often they are replaced to fix issues, that would be a good gauge I think on where the B8 ABS sensor items could end up at in the future.

The only instructions I have is what I put in the original post. I'll do more net research but I don't think it's that involved. If folks on here can get windows to roll down remotely, get gauges to do gauge sweeps, etc., then simply disabling TPMS can't be that hard. Saturday would work fine. Just throw me a PM and we can figure something out.

If anyone else on here is reading this and knows more than I do about doing this and wants to share... Please post up!
