Not sure what else is out there at that size. I would buy an older euro before a newer domestic any day.
I usually think the same way and that's why I drive a B6 S4 as my daily. But to be honest, and sorry to seem to keep justifying my new purchase, in the 7 passenger space the Durango was a no brainer for me and I really like it.

Its got a great cabin with really nice fit and finish, a sh1t-tonne of options, good quality materials (the metals are actually solid real metal etc). I think it looks pretty sweet and especially so in R/T trim. But the real winning point for me was the driving characteristics. The platform was jointly developed by MB and Chrysler and as such it really has that taut but supple (boobs?) ride quality that only kraut cars do. Plus in R/T trim you get better calibrated steering, lower stiffer shocks/struts and different camber profiles.

Add the platform development to the fact that its corporate overlords are Italians and its feeling pretty pseudo-euro. To get into a MB GL for the price I paid (I got a good deal) it’d have to be an 08-09 with 75-80,000 kms yet mine has a 5 year warranty.

The ML is pretty nice, and I agree that MB is still a really nice step up, but I would imagine that the reliability and maintenance can't be that much better than the Q7??

Re: would you buy a used Audi Q7?

I'm going to pipe in, this is a bit late but anyone looking for a bigger vehicle that can haul a few people should consider a domestic (and sounds like you did).

I don't know why, snobbery aside someone would consider a older, high maintenance (even an audi parts guy on here is saying so), euro vehicle over a newer, cheaper, lower maintenance (perhaps with warranty) vehicle. Plus, if you are even considering towing then it's a no brainer. Plus, most domestics have have selective 2wd/Auto/4wdHigh/4wdLow, saving money and wear and tear in good weather (and towing). I struggled with the decision also and when I bought it I felt like I had somehow sold out. After a few years of ownership with nothing but a few small issues (covered by warranty) not to mention 30-40$ oil changes and services I had no regrets.

I admit the interiors on the Euro's are nicer (to some degree), but I think that's where the pro's end (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Congrats on the Durango, I briefly cross shopped them when I was looking, I hear they are pretty nice. I bet you payed a fair bit less than a Q7 and won't pay thousands in maintenance to keep it out of the shop. Only thing is I wish you would have bought my expedition

        Sincerely,
        A domestic SUV owner. /rant

well probably won't be for 7-9 months but i'll probably keep the AR for myself for another 1-2 years and then a new SUV

          either ml350 or 550
          maybe a Q7
but i was looking at domestics like the ford edge or lincoln version of ford edge
or even a jeep cherokee fully loaded but they are $$$$$

i actually want an X6 lol but the wife hates it i like them

Infinity QX56 is very solid. I drive one about once a month (previous gen), and i really like it. The new one has more power.

Re: would you buy a used Audi Q7?

I have to admit, I'm attracted to the Audi for its looks, interior and its brand, ultimately this will be a client car quite often and the perception of an Audi and a Dodge will still be there for people that don't know anything about cars at the end of the day. Nonetheless, having the Q7 in the shop all the time will make it an even worse client car since its not even available I suppose

I'm going to check out the domestics, but like Ryan said, domestics are not always value propositions either and often have to be fully loaded in order to feel as luxurious - $$$$$ - buts that just my feeling

The way I feel about any car is that for the amount of money I'm spending I'd better enjoy it every time I get in.

I don't get that feeling from any domestic I've ever driven or even sat in. Logic is all well and good but at the end of the day there are two kinds of people, the kind who feel satisfied with their purchase and the kind that need to convince themselves that they're satisfied with their purchase. Generally drivers of domestics are in the later category.

A bold statement, and I can say for myself, that absolutely does not apply. I could say the same about those who buy European cars, they are willing to ignore the fact their 75000 car has reliability issues all the time because you have to "Pay to play" or, "the interior is so awesome".

Also, for those in the "have a family" category, needs are also different. You can't simply buy a vehicle because "The interior feels nice".

That's just my take on it anyway. As I said, there isn't a single vehicle apart from domestics and a couple of Japanese (that had long term problems) that could meet our needs anyway. At least in that category, I would still consider a VW or BMW as a daily driver.

Interesting, not sure of the spirit of this so I'll go with the benefit of the doubt. I have been talking about my new truck in this thread because I actually DO like it, I actually DO like the way it drives which, for a 5400 lb vehicle, is actually very well. In fact it makes my mother in law's MDX seem like a wallowing POS (not that an MDX is a natural autocrosser). I have also been talking about it because, like you, I have never been attracted to domestics (save I suppose a Vette or Mustang) yet have found this truck to be very undomestic in nature. In fact I would have ever only bought an earlier gen Durango for a demolition derby.

With my S4 I regularly put up with the bullsh1t and $$ that comes with driving a car with a four cylinder engine bay with a limited production V8 crammed into it because I first and foremost vote with my heart when it comes to cars. In fact I am prepared to endure a heroic level of abuse from the S4 because I love it. So trust me when I say I in no way feel like I've settled with the Durango (again, a vehicle riding on a chasis in that it shares with the ML/GL).
