  • Rebuild or Replace?

I've had my 2001 S4 for two full years now and have put over 60,000 km on it for a total of about 220k on the car. It's still purring, but I'm looking at a fair bit of work to keep it tip top. Motor and gearbox are tight, so it would be mainly suspension and driveline. No doubt about it, this is the best balanced car I've owned as far as comfort and performance are concered and I'd like to hang onto it...the big "but" is that while I have the cash to put into it, I don't have the time to do it and my monthly mileage is about to increase significantly.

Am I further ahead replacing the car (G-35's and 335xi's are definitely appealing) or would it be worth paying all the shop time to rehab it? I figure I could sink $4500-$6000 into it pretty quickly without touching the motor...market value of the car right now would probaby be in the $8000 neighborhood...

I will gladly consider both offers to purchase the car or offers to undertake the work...

    Re: Rebuild or Replace?

i did this in the last 2 years.. probably 4gs worth of effort (DIY work tho)

my s4 only has 138k on it..

between 120-138 i did the following
    full control arm replacements
    new suspension (coils)
    new fuel filter
    new bushings EVERYWHERE
    new motor mounts
    new AC compressor
    new alternator

car is basically brand new again (well other than the stock k03s) and its amazing.. now i need to repaint the POS

i'm keeping my b5 forever its not worth it to sell.. even if it gets the point where i hate working on it.. i'll stage 3 it and keep it and have it as my 'fun car' and not a DD.. just buy a newer b8 or vw or something for that

      Re: Rebuild or Replace?

i have 123k on mine now and i'd rather fix it before looking at something else again at the moment. If you already have a second set of tires and mats, you know whats wrong with it, and no payments at the end of the day, those are a lot of reasons not to buy something else.

The resale value isnt huge, but if you buy something new you will have to consider why. Likely you will keep the new one almost as long as this one, and have no resale value again at that point in time. save yourself the payments imo.

You could just give it to me, I would be very appreciative, and make sure to give it a good home

Bwah! Akshully that was the first thing I thought of but I didn't want to lead you down the road of auto-indebtedness dependancy disorder.

I think I will end up keeping it...my rational being that at this point, like Ryan, I'll never "recover" my investment (stoopid oil pans). And for what I paid for it originally, investing $4k still gets me more car than I can likely replace it with with something newer.

...I will pick up a skid plate for sure this time...

I would reccommend getting rid of it. Putting 60% of a cars value into it for maintenance is insane to me. I would only do that if It was an extremely special car that I truly loved. Maybe that's you B5 to you. I hated mine.

stop whining colin because your floors were bent up. i kid i kid

the reason i say keep it.. you will NOT find a car as fast and as nice as the s4 regardless of the maintenance.. everyone who buys one (unless you own one from 0km) knows very well going in what its going to cost

LOL! Id take holes in my floors in exchange for all the other problems!

A car that taught me that speed isn't all that important. I probably just turned in my "car guy" card with that last statement.
