  • A Job For... Someone Else?

Almost on cue, a stud which broke off during IM removal would not take heat and thus be coaxed out. So. Drastic measures ensued. Help, or BTDT advice is especially appreciated!!! Tried using a drill-bit easy-out but just wouldn't bite. So we drilled it out and will tap the hole once I confirm the proper size. I hear I should use a heli-coil... can anyone confirm/deny?

Or should I just capitulate and have a machine shop do so for me?

That picture scares me cause it doesn't look like your drilling it straight. A heli coil could work. If its just the intake manifold its shouldn't leak and there isn't too much stress on it.

To sum it up I don't know. I've used heli coils to hold motors together on overhead cranes, so i know they would work.

It was straight i made sure of that.
A heli coil is meant more for stripped threads. The hole would have to be drilled out to a bigger size to get a heli coil in and theres not to much meat left there. And its not for the intake manifold its for a coolant inlet.
If you just tap that it should be fine but if you really want i can most likely get you a heli coil from work let me know.

they have heli coils to repair spark plug threads so you'll be fine.

                LOL you guys

Mike may as well grab one, or six, couldn't hurt to have one on hand... no? Helicoils could come in handy, if not now then down the line (for me or someone else).

I was planning on just tapping it out but wanted to put it out there to the peanut gallery and solicit outside opinions... just in case! A hundred bucks to a machine shop is waaaaaay cheaper than sourcing a new head.

But... DIY leaves more cash for the necessities in life, you know: beer, suspension and turbos.

Super happy I took the head into EC Machine to get the hole plugged, they did a great job. Only took a couple days and right on their one hour quote.

You're so happy you posted it twice!
I would have tapped it out put a bolt in with some washers and tightened it up to see if it pulled out. If it moves time for a coil. Either way fixed now
