  • Odd brake issue

This has been intermittent since I got the engine back in. I dont know if its a by-product of old brittle wires and cold temps causing wires and their covers to crack causing shorts, or a failing part. Need some insight. It's getting dangerous, with the gravel and stuff braking without ABS gets very sketchy, and i've already got enough issues with my back, dont need a car accident added to the list.

The issue is something going crazy and all of a sudden I will get a brake pad sensor warning, the ESP turns off, and ABS and Brake start lighting up and I lose ABS. Once it's gone it will only come back if I turn the car off, and when I start it back up its a crap shoot whether the issue is still there.

The causes can be anything from starting it when the car is cold, to driving along and hitting a small bump. I can give it the beans and it might do it, it might not.
If there is a sufficient jolt to the car it seems to go off for sure, but sometimes I can drive for 2 days without it going off.

When I pulled the codes it said it was the brake pedal sensor. So today I replaced that part with a brand new one.
Drove it around for 15 minutes, nothing, drove the piss out of it, nothing. Then as i pulled out of the driveway of my place it went off again. Clearly that wasn't the cause.

I had an issue with my crank position sensor working in a similiar fashion, and we found the heat shield for it had cracked when I pulled the engine, and so sometimes it just would not work.
I'm having similiar issues with this and I'm wondering if its going to be a similiar solution.

Where should I be looking in the harness and engine bay for wiring that could be cracked or faulty? I have looked at the ABS module and theres nothing around it that I touched. The ABS module also doesn't seem like the culprit because when those start to go they go. When my ABS is working and this issue isn't occuring, its fantastic and very strong.

    Any ideas?

I haven't been able to re-Vagcom the car today to see whether its still saying its the pedal sensor, or now something else.
If it says its the pedal sensor I know its not, thats in with a good connection.

Sounds like a wheel speed sensor or maybe be a gummed up encoder ring (the ring the speed sensor runs over to count revolutions), part of the hub assembly.

Getting the following errors when I VAG-com'd

P1649 - databus drivetrain missing message from ABS module
          P0571 - Brake switch A trouble code

I replaced the brake switch so its not that, and the ABS module works fine when this other crap isn't going on.

How would I go about checking to see if its a wheel speed sensor and which one it would be.

            Re: Odd brake issue

Can you communicate with the ABS module with the VAGCOM? If not possibly a failed ABS pump module, apparently its fairly common ( http://www.passatworld.com/forums/sh...s+unit+failure ). If you can communicate with the ABS module monitoring individual wheel speed sensors should give a good idea if any of them are not working, sounds like a intermittent concern so might not show right away.

It could be the cluster but more than likely the ABS module.
Bosch ones **** the bed with that code quite often.ATE even worse but at least those we can open up and re-solder.
Bosch ones never found a solder break so suspect a chip or transistor failure.
So if it's Ate probably a solder connection 98% of a repair rate.
Bosch repair 0% .. replacement only so far.
              I'll post some pics.

I got a bad speed sensor right now, and yes both ABS and ESP come on.

mine is intermittent and triggers multiple times while driving. it has all the tell-tale signs of a damaged wire or solder.

You answered your own question.ABS wheel sensor will trigger the appropriate fault.Be leary of a r/r fault generally it's the module and not the sensor.
