  • please tell me its not the turbo lady

Well on my drive home from work which is about a 10 minute commute i noticed a nasty burning oil smell. car has been in and out of safe mode due to an 02 sensor so i was only boosting 6psi.

Get home park the car and when i open my door its full of smoke inside the cabin, wtf. i check the exhaust and it definetly smells like oil and has some residue. is it time for k04s? FML.

I have to further inspect but im not sure what the issue is, chipped the car about 6000km ago. looks like my torn belly pan is the least of my worries. ****!

Really hard to say without a full inspection, turbos definitely blow blue or white smoke if they go, usually enough to fill an intersection
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

im hoping maybe its a valve cover gasket, i didn't notice any excess smoke when driving other than in the cabin

If you get the car up to operating temperature and then let it sit and idle, you'll know right away if the turbo(s) are blown.

The nice thing about the winter is that you can see the source of the smoke much easier than in warmer weather. Just let it sit and idle and look for the source of the smoke.

Might want to check your PCV system to make sure it isn't plugged. With the cold weather, there was a bunch of guys on Audizine (myself included) that were belching smoke like crazy due to iced up PCV systems. Condensation can form inside the hoses on short drives and then it freezes. Over time it prevents your engine crankcase from ventilating properly and can cause symptoms that mimic a blown turbo.

drove it to work today and there was no smoke, turbos were boosting fine, didn't sound abnormal, i will look at it once it gets lighter out and check for the source.

Re: please tell me its not the turbo lady

It was probably just frozen condensation in the PCV system. I've seen that before. It causes the oil pressure to shoot up, and a little oil to seep past some of the oil seals and burn on the hot engine/exhaust...

^^ bingo^^ when i took my oil cap off last night there was a **** load of pressure when i took it off, and i mean alot of pressure.

than when i heard it could be the PCV system acting up from being frozen it made sense, lol was quite the scare though!

i appreciate all the good info!

Reading all this about the 2.7 is making me really paranoid about when mine will start acting up. All I got right now is a mystery coolant leak that I will tackle when it gets warmer.

i have one of those as well, dont worry about the car acting up, this is the first time i have ever had anything to this extent happen, it has been incredibly reliable but also very well maintained.

                          I win

Glad it wasn't anything serious. Depending on how bad the problem was, you may want to take your intake apart and clean out the oil. My intake was FULL of oil. MAF sensor was coated, MAP sensor was throwing a code, IAT sensor was coated. My system plugged on the highway though....so the effects were probably a lot worse.
