  • Remote Starter

    Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie on the forum. I have a lease ending at the end of March and have decided that I would like to drop the trucks and go for something sporty and German!!!

Been looking at the ones that have all wheel drive (I live in Calgary) in particular the 3 series or C class. I've been trying to find out if it's possible to have a remote starter fitted to either of these. Unfortunately the wifes SUV takes up too much garage space!!!

Does anyone know if it's possible to have an aftermarket starter fitted to either of these and whether it voids your warranty? I''ve been told by a BMW employee that it doesn't.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Re: Remote Starter

From the research I've done people who are car enthusiasts avoid remote-starters because you have to defeat your immobilizer (if you're manual trans) and the excessive idle time will gunk up your catalytic converter(s).

On the other hand, the burden of proof is on the dealership to prove that any aftermarket part was directly responsible for the breakdown. IE, they can't point at your aftermarket brakes as the cause of your turbo dying, etc.

      Re: Remote Starter

Thanks for the answer PRY4SNO, I wasn't aware of the cat issue. The immobiliser wouldn't affect me as I would be getting (my apologies to the purists!!!) an automatic!!! :-)

My buddy who worked for BMW told me that BMW found that remote starters had an effect on the cars computer. Which I thought was a little odd. Surely a company with the stature of BMW could make a remote starter and their computer compatable? Anyways, my wife has kindly agreed to put her SUV in the driveway in winters, so it looks like it will be a non issue anyway. Although I'm still going to pursue it, more out of curiosity than anything else.
      Thanks again.

          Re: Remote Starter

not sure why you would want a remote starter.. it's not very environmentally friendly and there is plenty of evidence showing that actually moving your vehicle warms it up faster.

no, i refuse to link you to it.

luunta, I appreciate you don't get the weather we do, so I'll explain my reasons. Quite simply, when your car is outside in -30c & you get into a cold vehicle & start to drive, you get frost on the INSIDE, that's why I want to warm it up first for 5 or 10 minutes. I didn't ask anyone to send me a link to a remore starter. I only asked if anyone knew whether it was possible to fit one.

Recirculating coolant heater makes for a nice warm car, and you don't have to worry about the immobilizer.

The immobilizer still effects you either way. All new cars have them, they have to do with starting the car not if it is auto or standard. Now auto remote starts are easier to install as manuals need some more devices to ensure they are in neutral before they can be remote started. This is also another downfall because if you park on a hill or slope and your ebrake fails you have no backup. Be prepared for a $500-$1000 install cost. For me a coolant heater will do. BTW they don't recirculate either they work via convection, hence why they are usually installed at the lowest point in the engine.

Cheaper to move to Vancouver than to put remote start in a TDI

Nicer to live in a city that isn't -30 for 4 months. Gross weather. Had to get away!

Probably better to build a garage in the long run, though. Remote start is standard on some new vehicles though, is it not?

Flyboy, Stonewall thanks for the info on the coolant heater, I'd never heard of them. That might be an alternative.
