I'm thinking were going to be seeing a lot more of the smaller engines with turbos in the coming years, what you see here might be the start to something good.

I think what he means is that typically the M engine has been completely different from others in the same model lineup... not just the same engine with a few small changes. (Assuming the changes to the N54 are just small tweaks)
