  • Spec me a new engine (build)

    So.

I need a new engine. Looking for a low mileage AMB, otherwise a B6 1.8t parts car would be even better. A heads-up would be much appreciated on the local hook-up!

My goals are to retain as many OEM parts as possible, including displacement, while building a track-ready (1/4 mile / auto-x) yet bulletproof & everyday drivable setup for long-haul commuting.

Parts cost money & labour = time.

Keep in mind the CQ is drivable, and I am now working a two-week-in / one-week-out work schedule. So I am by no means rushed to do this properly... THE SECOND TIME.

What else will I need? (Strictly engine-wise, of course )

.. AMB longblock, <120,000 km & timing belt kit
    .. New oil pump
    .. Connecting rods (IE)
.. Rod bearings (OEM or 034 Motorsport)
.. Gaskets, studs/nuts/bolts/tools, etc. (List, please!?)
    .. Skid plate (Panzer Plate)
    .. TIP (ER black anodized)
    .. W/M injection (Aquamist HFS1)
    .. Downpipe (034 Motorsport)
.. Mounts: engine & transmission, street density (034 Motorsport)
    .. Fuel injectors (Bosch 440s)
    .. Tune (Unitronic Stage II)
    .. Clutch (Clutchmasters FX400)

Re: Spec me a new engine (build)

First time I roasted my motor after the complete build was during an all day track event (8hrs), the oil return rubbed away at my a/c pump, oil light came on too late, and bob's your uncle.

Then I was all scared and **** about building up the second motor. After spending $$$ on a new crank and one JE piston I decided to go all out on all the small things like hardware. Now I drag my a4 like it owes me money, never had an issue with anything since I did it right the SECOND TIME as well.

I have an AEB head with nothing in it, just the head, no valves.

I can help you with some of the 034 products, maybe others. I didn't see any hardware on that list like . Eurospec offers a complete 1.8T hardware lineup, even their clutches are crazy. Again PM if you want my help.

What was the verdict on your old motor?

As always, I can help you out with whatever VAST/JHM/OEM parts you decide to go with, Dustin.

Chris didn't even need to look inside, just turning it over was enough to tell the bottom end knocks and the pistons are slapping the heads.

Basically, the last guy knew it was running lean (I remember him mentioning as such, but was too flustered to take note) but convinced me, "it would sort itself out." So along the way my engine predetonated and cratered.

I might be interested in the clutch, but understand that the RS4 pressure plate is a weak link... though my A4 isn't throwing down B5S4 levels of torque so it should be okay?

That sucks! Too bad you were advised to let it "sort itself out", as you say. Auto-related problems almost never "sort themselves out". You have to fix them if you want them to go away. I'm still surprised at the way that interaction went. Like you say, he must have just been having a bad day. Crappy luck, man.

Every clutch/PP fails from time to time. You just hear about more RS4 PP's failing than others because of the shear volume of RS4 PP's running around out there. I've never had any problems with any of the RS4 PP's that I've sold or used, which is a lot. Your car shouldn't have any issues, especially since I don't think you're going to be pushing upwards of 500hp through it.

I like the idea of OEM+ so I just might go that route instead of the CM. I tend to ride my clutch (smoother driving and less pricey than a transmission), especially in stop-n-go traffic, so the engagement is crucial for me with my daily driver.

Not looking to go big-port at this time, mostly because I'm looking for an AMB head with usable existing OEM parts. Though, money talks... so for the right price I might be convinced.

Are you saying you have some quality NIB/used 034 parts available or that you distribute them locally?

The hardware was briefly mentioned, I need new gaskets and studs/nuts/bolts... though which ones specifically I do not know. Yet. And Integrated Engineering rods come with an ARP bolt kit.

That should work. Email me if you want a price on most of the parts on your list.

Re: Spec me a new engine (build)

So anything I ought to know about swapping in an engine from an auto 02 into a manual 04? Can I keep my ecu?

I'm going to remove the SAI/EGR/PCV so the difference on the TIP shouldn't be an issue. What else?

                    Firstly, CSB.

I believe the TIP transmission has it's own TCU.

Sorry mang, all I get out of that jargon is that the TIP has its own control unit.

Seeing as I'll be swapping an engine from a donor car that has an auto transmission, I'll need a machine shop to attach the pilot bearing. Anyone have a local favourite?
