    Re: Thinking about buying a 2000 S4

A4s have their share of gripes and it's the same thing it is with all 10 year old cars: some have fit and finish issues (peeling trim/switches, pixelated instrument clusters, aged/abused stereo, worn seats, etc). So what you're dealing with is entirely representative of the owner. Deferred maintenance = >$$$ in the end. And if something does go wrong, with the S4 it costs twice as much cause you have two to replace (IE. inline-4 vs v6).

If you're serious about it I'd look around and also focus on the States. For example, some stg3 cars are going for $10k-$11k down there so it's not hard to find a decent price -- even with duty/exchange/transit -- on a lower mileage stocker. Possibly consider an Avant (wagon) as you're looking for a crusier car to hit the mountains, etc. They also hold their value better as far fewer were produced.

Check the timing belt history, and have it measured in the PPI. Also look at the control arms and ball joints. Codes of course. Boost leak test. Evidence of paint work. Stock clutch engages firmly near to the floor. This may seem silly but check everything like the lighter, the cupholder, the wheel caps, the owner's manual(s), the sunroof, the arm rest, the 12v outlets, the card tray (dashboard), the AC, the cruise and heated seats; hate to nickel and dime later when you've got so much potential at hand. If you're getting green lights, CarProof and you should be hunting red lights and Mustangs.

2001.5 and 2002 had the sport pack which included chrome mirror caps and the new style badge (best place to look is in the instrument gauge. If it's the new one there and the spedo is legit it's a new style. These models also came with ESP.

    Good luck & welcome!

    PS

^^^ Above isn't to say every car has all those and more but those things do go as wear and tear, just that it's nice to find one that's cleaner than average in respect to those issues for obvious reasons.

I think if it were me I'd get a car with K04's and that way its one less thing to think about.. and a bunch more fun. With my two Stage 3 S4's, all Ive had to take care of is the small stuff.. coilpacks, EGT's, O2's etc.

It sounds like you know your way around the garage.. and enjoy doing it. I think an S4 would be a decent match! Parts arent that bad if you shop around (or ask here) and most items are pretty easy to replace with basic tools.
A Stage 3 would quickly turn you away from your Suby!

Haha. I dont know if there is much that would turn me away from my Subaru, except it consistently breaking down and being undriveable, like now.

My STI is stage 2 (turbo-back exhaust), open-source road tuned and is putting down about 240whp and 250tq at 6300rpm (8.25k redline). Having the 2.0L JDM motor, i lose low-end power and torque compared to the 2.5L USDM STI motor, but its a blast being able to rev up to 8k.

So, my experience has been that anything modified is going to be less reliable than stock. R-Audi, what you seem to be saying is that an S4 with k04's is going to be more reliable? Are the stock turbos that bad?

Anyway, im going to take a look at one tonight I think. Its a 2001 S4 on kijiji with less than 100k on it.

pending fuel delivery, you will probly get more than 100whp more than the subaru.
its going to be a big difference.

Argh. You guys are just as bad an influence as the guys over on the Western Subaru Club. If you're curious about my swap, there's a 56 page thread there detailing my project from start to... well.. not finish, but now.

The point is not to modify the S4. I want something that's nice and quick in stock form. I was originally looking at fixing, then selling the STi and importing an RS4 from the states, but I think that'll have to wait.

                    Re: Thinking about buying a 2000 S4

For many.. the fear of turbo replacement is what keeps them away from the S4.. cost of the Turbos isnt bad, but the labor of pulling the engine throws it over the top.

If the turbos have already been replaced, its just one less thing to worry about!

Its easy to say you dont want to mod.. but it will come.. one by one.. untill you get a ride in a stage 3 car and never look back!!

My car dyno'd at 386whp and 422 lb ft over at Riegel.

Sigh. Im pretty sure I've told newcomers the exact same thing regarding modifications when they join the Western Subaru Club.

Do you guys have a recommendation of a shop to get a pre-purchase inspection done at here in Calgary?

My top choice would be Tunedub.. but you cant really go wrong with the dealer.
I assume Calgary Autoworks and Riegel Tuning would be fine as well.

We've got someone like you over on the WSC. His name is Jutes. Maybe you guys can hang out and poke bears with sticks or something.

Thanks for the recomendations for Tunedub. Called them and they're bookiing for next friday, $90 for a PPI.

So, the car im looking at has been remapped to 305bhp and that's the "only modification". Im not sure how tuning works with Audis. For subarus, theres the Cobb Accessport for Off-the-Shelf tunes through your OBDII port. Is that how it works for Audis as well? How are the OTS maps in general? Does it basically just mess with timing/fueling and up the boost (im assuming its an Electronic Boost Control Solenoid)? From what Im hearing, if I go for it, ill probably get it detuned back to the stock map to keep the turbos healthy. As much fun as a stage 3 S4 sounds, I dont really want to bother with a turbo upgrade. Im already looking at one for the STI when its healthy.
