  • TT questions

I'm actually not a car expert. Surprise, right?

Anyways, my dad is looking for buy a TT or similar style vehicle for my step mom. He's open to (and somewhat preferring to) look in the states for a vehicle.

My question is what to look for in the TT, for something sporty, but comfortable and cost effective in around 30k CND. I've browsed E-bay with Graeme's assistance and found some hits.

What is everyone's favourite engine? 3.2L or the 2.0T? I'm a turbo fan myself, and I think my dad would be happier being able to chip a turbo engine rather than having the 3.2L. What years were great? Convertible/hard top? TT-S?

Opinions welcome and any relevant ownership information is good as well.

    No R32's.

He should buy an R3...........wait...........oh right...no R32's. Sorry man, I got nothing for ya. hahahaha but in all honesty it depends I think it depends on how the car will be driven. You said your dad would be happier chipping and upgrading a turbo car, but if its for your step mom is he still gonna be doing that? If so, I would probably go for the 2.0T since the 3.2's take much more to upgrade

I assume we are looking at MK2 TTs? I had a friend who had a 3.2 and it had a few problems with it, especially issues with the gas tank, but it was still a very nice car.

I don't know anything about them, really. I do know a bit about the various VW/Audi engines, and the 2.0T seems like the best bet.

My dad will occasionally drive it, as they go on trips to Whistler/other nearby areas and often take her ES300 since it's better on fuel than his piggy X5. He wants it to be able to drive sporty when he's in it, but still mild enough for when she's driving it.

              Re: TT questions

Really the 2.0T is a strong engine and you can get great reliable power out of it for relatively cheap. My dad has no problems on his 2.0T (A4 though) and is getting the mod bug to boot!

Stg.1 tune gets a 2.0T what you get out of a k04 on a 1.8T. Add upgraded dsmics and a tb exhaust and you're laughing.

Just be sure to get one with all the relevant options. Don't cheap out on things like HIDs and heated seats and nav and so on. They hold the resale and it's just plain nice to have frills. Not to mention super expensive to add later... like ecodes or Recaros.

Yeah he won't mod it, but wants it to be a luxury style vehicle. Odds are I'll be making a flight out to Florida and driving one up soon enough.

I think I know this car, there was a recent recall on the fuel tank roll over valve for the MK2 TT.

The 3.2 is honestly the least problematic engine we see here aside from the early 4.2. Not to say nothing ever goes wrong with them but major issues are few and far between when compared to other engine options. Tuning for it though is not wallet friendly if you want to go faster.

The 2.0 is decent and we just see more issues with them because they are the most plentiful engine, typical issues are the HP fuel pump and resulting camshaft damage. I know we have replaced a couple heads on them due to this issue cause they weren't caught early enough. Modding potential is there because of the turbo that are a little more wallet friendly but, even just a flash (through me) doesn't get you to the VR6 power numbers (238hp vs. 250hp) like it does on the A4 (261hp).

On another note if you are buying a U.S. market car be really dilligent in your search because I have seen some serious nightmare TT's come up over the border, it's always worth the extra for a well documented car. Send me a PM and I can get you some more info if you need.

Hope this helps with your search, good luck.

                        Re: TT questions

If you step away from AUDI for just one second, check out the BMW 335i. Its an I6 TT and makes awesome numbers with just some simple mods. If anyone is familiar with HPF and how they tuned M3's for over 1000hp, they are now working on a 335i. That must tell you something.... the N54 engine is going to make big power numbers!

With just a tune on a stock N54 engine you can make around 330whp, 340wtq.

Check it out. I have one, and would recommend it to anyone!

Meh, the 135 is a pretty small car. The E90 is slightly bigger, and the E92(what i have) is even bigger. The 135 is not much faster due to its slight weight savings. I am assuming he would want this car for DD. In that case you will need room for groceries, day trips to the mountains, etc. A 335 has lots of leg room for both front/back passengers. If he ever plan on putting anyone i the back of a 135i it will be very uncomfortable as the seats need to be pretty much moved to the very front. Its basically a 2 seater car, or a 4 seater for midgets.

2.0T is a wicked engine if you want cheap hp. I can flash a VAST tune onto the ECU and make some pretty serious numbers out of that motor. This would give you some kick when you get on the throttle, but the engine is still very drivable for a daily setup.
