I think at this point, it's the manner in which the dabate was initiated that it my biggest issue. I'm all for constructive discussions, even construtive criticism if it betters my knowledge. However when someone comes on a thread, unbidden, and feels that he has the right to blindly criticise my choice of components by calling them "shitty aftermarket parts". Then that person had better be ready to explain why he said what he said. Why? because this isn't VW Vortex and I for one don't think stuff like this should fly on this forum. Or at the very least, not on my threads.

PS: GTI Candian, thanks for the info. That's a good example of how to properly address a debate such as this.

I used to Work at DURA-LITE here in Calgary as a mechanical designer. I designed intercoolers / Charge Air Coolers, and I also designed / Reverse engineered the end tanks, and made drawings for casting at the foundry. Or designed Fabricated end tanks.

I am thinking on designing my own intercooler for the GTI and trading for work! lol


In response to Rondals post about the air entering the end tanks and immediatley being required to make a 90 deg turn, and thus making the upper end of the intercooler useless:
This is assuming that there are no baffles inside the end tanks redirecting flow, and smoothing out the turbulance.

Also, there will be a pressure drop from the hot side to the cold side, which will also aid in "Pushing" more air across the upper fins.

Now if we really want to continue this debate, I know an engineer who has a PHD in heat transfer and 10 years of experience with intercooler thermodynamic calculations.

i agree the pressure drop will help move air, and im actually not arguing with you. but like i said in my earlier post, i want to see the $230 intercooler with end tanks thats got baffles in the end tanks.
There are a million japanese intercooler companies. They put profit in front of function every step of the way, and as a result put out subpar products.

Whether you think you're entitled to, or whether you thought that you could get away with posting in the manner you did. Fact is Andrew, I have you up against a wall here.

Now with that said, I am willing to let this go if you care to apologise. We don't need to air this in front of the forum. A simple PM and I'll consider the matter closed. It's your call as to how you want to proceed here. But I just want to state for the record that I'm willing to let this drop if appropriate measures are taken.

lets try this again.

a large $230 mass produced japanese intercooler with end tanks as big as a jellybean while maybe slightly improving performance, will not be as efficient as a properly made IC, and will likely have significant downsides, such as blocking your radiator.

on the note of constructive, maybe the OP can cope with the fact that a passat is not in fact an audi, and that this is the wrong forum altogether.
