  • tiptronic GTRS elim dyno

Well, here's part one of my tip vs 5 speed driveline loss series. Part 2 will be after the 5 speed swap.

The runs were done at about 19 PSI on the stock SMIC (which by runs 4 and 7 was completely heat soaked). So with a proper FMIC and another 2-3 PSI I imagine that there is some more power to be had. However the results are what they are. What impressed me most was the area under the torque curve. Boost onset is really linear and the useful portion of the torque curve spans all the way from 3000-6500.

I'd also like to send a shout out to Lawrence and the guys at Calgary Autoworks for helping out on this one. If you haven't been over there yet, go check 'em out http://www.calgaryautoworks.com/ Great bunch of guys.

*No additional tuning or boost was added for the The M5 + 94 oct run. I pretty much just put it in and let 'er rip*

    Run 4 on 94 oct was 225.7 WHP 225.2 ft/lb

    Run 7 on M5 + 94 oct was 232.7 WHP 231.8 ft/lb

        Now get a damn FMIC!

Why did I think you would see more WHP than that? I'm surprised.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you would have expected more WHP out of my setup? To be honest I'm not completely surprised by it. I would have liked to see something in the 240-250 WHP range. However as I said earlier, I can't get that turbo boosting past 19-20 PSI. Either the wastegate is getting tired or my stock SMIC is choking things off.

I'm guessing the tip sucks about 20% of the CHP. If you apply a 20% correction factor to 230 WHP it works out to about 275 CHP. Give or take a few percent on either the dyno, intercooler, tune etc... and it's not much of a stretch to make 300CHP/250WHP on a tip. But like I said earlier, I could play the 'what if' game until the cows come home and it won't change the results; and quite frankly I don't really care seeing as I'm going to have a 5 speed in there soon.

Anyway, my main intent was to see what kind of difference I'll see between the tip and the 5 speed. The only thing that may skew things is if I upgrade the intercooler while I'm doing the swap. However I can probably set my boost control to give me the same MAF numbers that I was getting on the tip pulls. It wouldn't be ideal, however it would give me a pretty good idea.

Considering a stock a4 makes around 120whp, a passat would make around 140 due to fwd...

im only shooting for 260whp on my car.

Colin, I dont know if i cant take you for a ride before wuste as ill be pretty busy packing stuff up, its been kind of hectic...

Hopefully you can fly out to vegas!

I'd say that's pretty realistic, if a quattro manual looses 20% then you'd be in 310 CHP range which shouldn't be too hard with an elim. The only thing to remember when comparing numbers to a lot of the forum guys close to sea level is that they have another 10% more ambient air pressure to work with. So bear that in mind.
