Spoke with an APR technician today about the issue I have been having with my car having engine overboost codes along with lean code conditions…… I had a local backyard mechanic source out a K04 turbo from kinetics in Vancouver through Calgary Auto works, and gave him the cash for the turbo and TT 225 Injectors that are supposed to go along with the kit, I had also purchased the APR TIP at the same time and left him with all the money and components I wanted in my car…..
Once installed he was to have my car towed to Concept 1 to have my ECU reflashed to the applicable tune…. Once install was complete I was called and informed that my car was at concept 1 and had been reflashed and was ready to be picked up. Upon arriving at Concept 1 I had a technician tell me that the injectors in my car were not the TT 225 injectors, and that I may have problems running this tune with those injectors. I then contacted my mechanic and asked him why the hell he had put bosch 380CC injectors in my car when APR calls for TT225 386CC injectors, not to mention I gave him 500 bucks to buy the F**king things, he told me not to worry and to call Lawrence or Sam at Calgary auto works to confirm that the 380CC injectors will work on that tune… I talked to Sam and Lawrence at Calgary auto works and was reassured that the injectors in question would work………
Flash forward a few days I started having issues, I called my mechanic that did the job and he said maybe I have a vacuum/boost leak or a diverter valve problem, I went to his house and he hooked up his OBD scanner and the only code that came up at that time was “engine overboost”, I then called CAW again and asked what this could be, I won’t name his name again but he tried to sell me on an electronic or manual boost controller, he also told me it sounded like a diverter valve issue and pushed his turbosmart DV on me as well, the whole time knowing that I had been in there asking about these “WRONG” injectors that were on my car???? …….
More banging my head against the wall ensued……………
I called concept one the other day just randomly asking about the APR DV wondering if it should have failed only a year into owning it? The guy told me to come down and get the new updated “BLUE” spring and that should solve my honking noise issue that was coming with the soft limp mode condition and overboost.. So I went down there and picked up my spring and upon going into the shop I had noticed a modified super sick B5 S4 sitting outside, I decided to figure out who owned the car and try and see where he did his tuning and mods etc, and pick this guys brain…
(This is how and where I met DJ AKA Aliencurve)…. DJ has been a huge help with this whole issue allowing me to use his VAGCOM and diagnose some of the problems I have been having with my car, we ran a bunch of logs and those logs are what I talked to APR about today over the phone and voila the problem was exposed, and then again confirmed by APR and DJ…INJECTOR “FAIL”
The guy at APR explained the injector differences in depth and I took away what I could from it, R&D at APR was done with the TT 225 injectors after they had tried other programs with Delphi, seimens, bosch etc.. he went on to explain the spray cone pattern and how it differs from the Bosch and other injectors, he also explained that the TT225 injectors are based on a 5 valve engine design, when the Bosch design was based on a 2 valve cylinder design for other vehicles, he explained Flame Quench to me and fuel wash, and how it all relates to the symptoms I have been getting, as well as detonation in the exhaust manifold due to fuel wash and all the potential hazards that come along with running incorrect injectors and running very lean.
Needless to say I called that mechanic and expressed quite clearly the importance of him returning my money for the injectors, as I was slowly turning green and about to hulk smash everyone at CAW as well as him….. I’m sickened by the lack of information and lack of care some of the local tuning shops are giving people, I am so grateful for flukily running into DJ at concept 1 and having someone take the time to help a guy out with an issue that might have come to the detriment of my beloved A4… My point to this whole story was not only a brief ramble about injectors, but also a wakeup call to the lack of knowledge a few of our trusted tuning shops have towards certain tunes and our cars. I will never buy anything from CAW again.
