  • Q5 2.0T vs 3.2 - Opinions Please!

So, I would like to place an order for a 2011 Q5 this month. Engine choices are 2.0T (211 HP, 258 tq) or 3.2 (270 HP, 243 tq). 2.0T is same engine as the A4.

-Fuel economy between the two is a toss up, so that won't sway my decision.
-I do a fair bit of winter driving to the mountains
-Plan to drive the car for 5+ years, so low maintenance a priority.
-Love the HP of the 3.2, so I'm a little gunshy of getting the 2.0T for a truck that weighs 4200lbs. Drove the A4 with the 2.0T and noticed some turbo lag, so would think it would be more exaggerated in the Q5.
-Just comparing factory engines - can't see myself chipping the 2.0T since I don't want to void the warranty.

I'm leaning toward the 3.2, but just wanted to hear some input from you experts!

i think you answered you own question then

i would get the 2.0t and chip it and have more power than the 3.2 but if you don't want to go that route the 3.2 is a great motor

I think most people on here would say buy the turbo and chip it as it will give more power than the V6 and it will have better fuel economy and the cost will be much less. But if fuel economy doesn't really matter and you don't want to chip it the V6 seems like what you will end up with as 211hp doesn't seem like enough for 4200lbs.

As Ryan said I think you answered your own question. And if you don't like turbo lag (personally I don't mind it at all) then I think the 2.0T would annoy you.

That said, I've been looking at SUV's and Crossovers for the last couple months and I just couldn't get too serious about the Audi's, they are nice to look at and the interiors are nice but they have less power and have less towing capacity then most out there, especially for what you pay.

Is the 2.0T new for 2011 in a Q5 as 2010s only come with the 3.2?

I know someone with a 3.2 S line Q5 and he is very happy with it.

im totally not a fan of the audi SUV's either. but for a vehicle that heavy, it almost has to be either a chipped turbo or the bigger displacement.

If you're opposed to chipping the ECU, and you don't like turbo lag, it seems like a no-brainer to me. Get the 3.2.

i'd go with the 3.2... even if you chipped a 2.0, the addition of a 100hp would require more then a chip (exhaust, intake, maf, injecotrs) .. the 3.2 will have a great powerband and torque. it'll be smoother and controllable acceleration.

I test drove a 3.2 and it was pretty sweet. Pretty quick for a small SUV and very smooth power delivery. No idea how the 2.0 will be but the 3.2 was very nice.

On the same day I drove the turbo diesel Touareg and for roughly the same $$ it is lots bigger and very very torquey. Not quite as car like to drive as the Q5 but lots of grunt and basically just as nicely appointed.

Reasons? hum, well I'm an audi owner and even though I prefer the interior of the toureg over the Q5, the desiel for the mileage the torque etc, and I believe its lighter than the Q5.

So assuming equiv RPM as these ratings..

So basically the 2.0T has more torque. which is better for off the line acceleration (city driving)? However, the 3.2 has more HP which is better for highway driving?

Chipping the 2.0T will create more HP, however might not equal the 270hp, however, it will still have more torque then the 3.2 right?

                            Only in the higher rpm's.

Q5 is essentially a car and comes in at 500kg lighter than a Touareg, Both the L/100km and HP are comparable, the TDI obviously has more Torque therefor being able to tow another 1500kg's. Tough to compare them as they are in different classes.
