  • Compression test results

    Cyl 1: 170psi
    Cyl 2: 150psi
    Cyl 3: 155psi
    Cyl 4: 165psi

Poured a cap of oil in Cyl 2 and it shot up to 170psi. Obviously the rings are not perfect.

My question now is, how would my engine fare with a GTRS turbo? Im planning on running a conservative tune and use it as my DD.

A rebuild and some rods will be done in a couple years, since time and money is tight as a university student.

those are still good numbers. u got lots of life left. boost is, drive it and enjoy it. when it starts burning oil, then rebuild

one suggestion, put a catchcan on your pcv. you don't want any crankcase oil getting pushed into your intake piping. and you def don't want that oil being burnt with intake air because it'll cause detonation and make bad rings into bad pistons.

Agreed. Just don't run it too hot with that big turbo until you can build the engine properly.

what better reason to rebuild an engine?

run it! boost it! rock it! then fix it

Nothing wrong with those numbers. How did the spark plugs look?
Leak down test would be a better check.

You shouldnt have much to worry about with anything smaller then a GT28rs. Any bigger and you are pushing the limits of the internals... (2871r etc)

28rs on a 1.8T are quite a bit of fun! I had one on my 98 A4 for some time...

Yeah, I don't plan on going bigger than the GTRS eliminator. I'll build the engine When my budget permits it.

DJ, how would you suggest running the catch can? Maybe I could grab you some beers and you could show me once I have all the parts

Catch can is super easy with a 1.8T.. hell I'd get rid of the entire PCV system. You can buy adapter plugs from the block, and run it straight to the catch can. Presto! No more crappy plastic hoses.
Das Auto has done a few of them.. they would be good to talk to.

The GTRS elims are a nice turbo to run on the 1.8T's. I've got one and I love it. Is your car a standard or a tip?

                          Re: Compression test results

OK, so as long as you've upgraded the clutch then you'll be set. The GTRS elims have a nice spool time for a BT. It starts building useful thrust at about 3000 RPM and hits full spool at about 4000. With a good tune you'll be at an easy 300 CHP. More than enough power to have some fun with.

Yeah, looking at grabbing a clutchmasters FX400 as soon as my clutch starts slipping from all the power :P
