  • Goin' GT28

Well boys and girls, I didn't count on it happening but I've just ordered a GT28 clone. Jesse from usedturbos.net had it kicking around and wanted to get rid of it and gave me a price I couldn't refuse. He's not 100% sure if it's a BB or journal bearing. However based on the play in the shaft, it looks like a journal bearing type. The good news is that it has four fittings on the CHRA so it's water cooled.

Now before I get the "It'll blow up in 10 minutes" speech, I'm aware that that may be the case. However I spoke to Jesse at some length and as far as he knows, it came from one of the better factories. I'm also taking the precaution of having him pull it apart and perform a high speed balancing on it before he ships it to me.

Soooo, I guess that means that I've got to find me a T25 manifold, Garrett lines and other intake odds and ends. If anyone knows of anyone that has some used stuff for sale let me know.

    Here's some pics

Do you currently have a K04? Tiptronic tranny?

Tip tranny with an IPT torque converter and a hybrid K04 with a 32lb/min compressor on a K04-015 turbine housing. So in all honesty if it's a GT2560 style with a 30-31 lb/min compressor (which I think it is) I probably won't be seeing a huge increase. However it gives me a lot more options in terms of turbo sizing. Right now the only option I have if I want to go bigger is to buy a elim series and they're $1500.

Hey, make sure you get the torque converter and valve body upgrades. A company called Level 10 provides this as well.

Like I said, I've already got an IPT torque converter upgrade. As for the valve bodies, I'm not going to bother. I got to doing the math and after the $900 or so it'll cost I could put another $1500 into it and do a manual swap. I just don't trust the tip to hold up in the long run much past 300 HP even with the valve body upgrades. Besides, my current turbo is probably pushing about 275 ish HP, so a GT28r isn't going to be a huge leap like it would be if I was going from a K03 or even a regular K04-015.

As for level 10, I don't know man. While they've seemed to do good work in the past I've heard some sketchy things about them http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218121 Not saying that the work they did for you is no good. However, unless that guy is outright lying, those photos are pretty damning.

PS nice ride, do you have any footage of your tach/speedo during a second gear pull? I've recorded a few of mine and tried to compare to other BT tips just to get a rough comparison as to what this hybrid setup of mine is putting out. Here's my footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DqgHmyTiec

Well, bit of a change in plans boys and girls. As some of you may know I pulled my existing turbo to do some porting work and had the pleasure of finding out that I have damage to the turbine. So I ended up buying a used GTRS (2860) eliminator off one the the Passatworld guys. With any luck it'll be here within a week and I can get my ride back onto the road. If anyone knows of a good place to get coolant and oil lines (or if you have some used ones) let me know.

So the elim's in and running. Let me say, I'm impressed. I've only ran it at 45% duty cycle and it's flowing about the same MAF values as my last turbo at 80-85% DC. Spool-up is also really reasonable as well. I think the 800 RPM that IPT added to the stall speed makes a big difference as far as lag is concerned. All in, I'd say that the GTRS elims aren't a bad choice for the tips.
