  • Any ideas on this issue with the allroad?

Ever since it got really cold a couple weeks back something has not been right. Every morning when I go out and start the car for the wifey it smells (VERY strong) like gas inside the cabin...and even around the car on the outside. There is no visible leaking anywhere and no fault codes...so the vapours are escaping from somewhere. It's so bad that she has to roll down the windows (which you can imagine how pleased she is in doing so when it's -30!). The smell doesn't go away until the car is up to normal operating temperature.

Any ideas? Anyone run into this before? I had a semi-related smell in the S4 a while back that ended up being the carbon canister...but it was no where near as bad...

Hi Kyle, check around the injectors or even the fpr, the o-rings can shrink in the blistering cold causing a bit of leakage. Doesn't take much of a leak either with gas to really stink.

More than likely sweating around the fuel rail and when it heats up it goes away.
Does'nt take much to contaminate the cabin.
      Very common problem.
The other issues are leaking fuel injector o-rings.

leaky injectors, or leaky injector o rings, or leaky fuel supply line. it happened to me during last years cold snap. i ended up replacing all o rings, one injector and the fuel supply line....no issues so far during this cold snap.

kyle happened to my s4 last winter when it was this cold

injector o rings compress from the cold and gas leaks out til the engine heats up and they expand again

i bought 6 new orings from erik at royal oak and installed them myself.. wasn't hard at all and then no more leaky

one of mine that was a 'BAD' leaker no word of a lie spewed out probably 4-6 litres of gas into my engine bay when the car was warming up! scared the crap outta me

to check just start the car cold and pop the engine bay and remove the covers and look at them.. you'll see it coming out and smell it for sure..

only ever leaked on me when it was -28 or colder i found

I've seen that happen with leaky injector o-rings, as well as the fuel supply line. The crimp on the hose can leak when it gets really cold.

X2 on the supply line crimp. Although it's a different engine mine sprung a pinhole leak when it was -30. That was a real joy to fix I'll tell ya.
