  • EGT questions

So I got my EGT sensor set up and bombed around town seeing what my EGT's would do. While driving I'm seeing a low of about 1000F and averaging about 1200F at cruise. If I really stand on it (i.e. full 2nd and 3rd at max boost) I'm seeing about 1350-1400F which drops to 1200 as soon as I let off. As far as I know 1600F is where things start to melt. Anyone else have any info on what's acceptable for EGT's?

PS: I should also mention that my pyrometer is post turbine, right behind the cat flange (So about 2-3 inches behind the turbine itself). Does anyone know what kind of a temp differential there is between where I have it and the turbine housing temps? I can't imagine it's too much if I'm already reading 1200F at cruising speeds. Any thoughts?

Your every safe there, thats only about 730 to 760c you are getting, I was seing almost 800c on my car and thats with a 11.9 A.f.. I know that if your 6" down stream with the sensor it will show around 200 degrees lower from what I test on my own car

        LOL!

Did you never watch any videos of turbo engines on dynos? The entire exhaust (including the hot side of the turbo) glows red - red/yellow hot. Some of the really hot exhausts will actually glow almost white hot!

I've personally seen turbos glow orange after really hard driving (and popping to hood immediately to see the glow).

        Yes, they run that hot!

Neat. I have seen industrial diesel turbos glowing. But I guess it never really crossed my mind how hot this **** was.

            Re: EGT questions

On my diesel i have my egt probe pre-turbo as that was reccomended from my research and where most guys with these little diesels are installing them. I know 1400F is about the highest the little 1.6/1.9 idi diesel's should go, Anymore then that is when melting action starts taking place

I don't know much about your engine or set-up but this is what i use. At work on the semi's all the pyro's are on the DP right behind the turbine say 3-4", and again thats a different beast.

              Re: EGT questions

Mine's about 2-3 in from the turbine. As for EGT's It seems like Diesels peak temps are about 250F different than the gas ones. (1400 Diesel vs 1650 Gas)

Well, that's somewhat reassuring. I figure with only 2-3 in inches to go, that under full load the exhaust gas isn't cooling enough by then to make a huge difference between the turbine and post turbine temps.

BTW, Where did you and Len end up after Deerfoot and Anderson? I was behind Ryan and the white Subie and lost you guys.
