  • 2012 BMW M1 is a GO

BMW’s M1 is back! And drivers can expect stunning design, impressive fuel economy and incredible performance to come as standard with the new model due on sale in 2012.

It will be based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, BMW’s star of the Frankfurt Motor Show, and Auto Express’s exclusive images reveal how the newcomer will look.

With an ultra-low ride height, active aerodynamics and an aggressive rear end, there will be no shortage of visual drama. Inside, there will be two-plus-two seating, and the low-slung driving position will be surrounded by cutting-edge technology, including a digital dash and multimedia connectivity.

A three-dimensional head-up display that shows information such as speed and speed limits, economy and sat-nav functions, plus an advanced version of BMW’s iDrive cabin control system, will also appear.

Practicality will be limited however, with BMW choosing to deliver a machine that sets a new benchmark for performance and efficiency, rather than creature comforts. At the core of this effort will be groundbreaking technologies which will see every aspect of traditional car design reinvented.

The most significant element of this huge effort will be the development of the 1.5-litre hybrid engine revealed in the Vision EfficientDynamics. The three-cylinder unit will be paired with a powerful electric motor – together both will offer more than 350bhp and 800Nm of torque.

To save fuel, top speed will remain electronically limited to around 155mph. However, the 0-60mph sprint is expected to take less than five seconds.

To make the most of this raw speed, the M1 will be equipped with BMW’s Air Curtain system. This arrangement channels airflow through the front bumper and out ahead of the front wheels. It reduces turbulence in the wheelarches and cuts the car’s drag coefficient to 0.22Cd – the lowest of any BMW. Subtle folds in the bodywork will also create downforce without the need to use large spoilers.

An inside source said: “This is one of the most exciting projects BMW has ever delivered. The engine is virtually production ready, while part of the hybrid system will debut in the new petrol-electric X6 Hybrid.
“Our DCT gearbox – already available in the M3 – offers quick shifts, and the new car’s chassis is a piece of art. Crucially, it’s ready for the road.

    ”

There’s no word yet on the cost of the new M1 – although it’s suggested that the mould-breaking model will be a rival to the Audi R8. That means prices are likely to start from £70,000. If that sounds like too much, there’s still cause for celebration among drivers hungry for a mix of performance and class-leading fuel economy.

The major elements of the M1’s design, including the 1.5-litre engine, gearbox and aerodynamics, will be offered in a variety of new BMW models, helping to cement the firm’s reputation as a market leader in clean, green performance cars. --http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/au...een_drive.html

R8 are nice but way over rated, not that fast an e60 m5 will take it no problem.

Thats awesome.... however when they say the M1 will be in direct competition with an R8...it should be in the same ballpark.

My S4 can take an E60 M5 no problem... still doesnt make it a fair comparison.

Wow, now that's a bold statement don't you think? You must know something that has eluded everyone else so far, care to elaborate? I decided to pop onto FastestLaps and ran a quick comparison between the two cars and the thing is that of the 17 tracks that are on the site where the two cars have recorded fast lap times the R8 is faster on all 17 of them, hmmmm interesting. On their recorded straight line times the 0-60's are identical and the M5 is .1sec quicker in the quarter. I would think the driver could easily make the difference with only a .1sec gap there, and like me they seem to think the R8 is "noticeably faster". http://www.fastestlaps.com/index.php...=458d5e1096b36 Either way though it isn't a fair comparison as you are comparing an incredible 2 seat mid engine sports car to one of the greatest sport sedans of all time, imo. I love them both but please in anything else but a straight line highway roll or a practicallity test the R8 will cream the E60 M5 performance wise.

Was that the V8 or V10 R8? Im guessing V8 since the V10 hasnt been out all that long...

well from my experiences in an R8 when blair and i were on a test track against chris in his big turbo TT

we did a roll from about 120 up to well over 200 (this was on that one track day)

and needless to say when blair down shifted the R8 with both of us in it and gave it some grunt we pulled like a mofo!!! and chris couldn't catch up well he says he was about to but we ran out of track

either way the aerodynamics behind the R8 are simply stunning!

Those are the times for the V8 R8, and here's the comparison sheet with the V10 R8, much fewer tracks to compare the two but the difference is significant (almost 30sec faster on the Nordschleife) and in the straights from a dig or a roll it would kill the M5.

I love how you guys talk about tracks and 1/4miles when the majority of "exotic and high end car" community only seem to interested in high speed pulls and street racing. I'm not taking a moral stand here nor there, just stating how it is.

I think manufacturer/magazine posted 1/4mile times are more accurate and consistent then your average joes street race.. Driver makes up for a huge difference with that.the majority of 'exotic and high end car' community are shitty drivers.
(Although this depends on the crowd you hang out with... I know quite a few exotic's owners that are track junkies,-(Calgary Exotic Car Club) but Im more referring to the young cool Inv. Bankers rolling around downtown and 17th..)
