You guys are intense with your oil change intervals. You might as well just change the oil every day when you get home from work

How can you tell the difference between a good oil and a bad one. Unless you take the motor apart?

I have asked this question before and never really got a satisfactory answer.
You can tell by the ratings and approvals on the back of the container, as well as the analysis that fazda mentioned. Send an oil sample at XX km's to Blackstone labs, and they'll tell you the exact mineral composition of your oil, the qualitative condition of your engine, and a rough estimate of how long you can run your oil in that engine with similar driving conditions before the oil's protective lubricating properties are exhausted.

If you do the analysis with different oils at similar oil change intervals in the same engine and with the same driving conditions, you can see which oils work best for you.

Has anyone here ever done the analysis?

I ran SuperTech (walmart house brand) in my Cabriolet. We owned the car for 8 years. Changed oil in it once. So maybe like 50,000k per change? Drove it like it was stolen. Never had a problem. But it did leak a bit, so I would top it up once in a while, so that was like a perpetual oil change.

We only changed the oil as one day we opened the filler cap, and the oil had appeared to turn to Cheese. Any idea what causes that?

Re: what oil are you guys running in your cars?

Yeah the Government of Alberta was nice enough to steal it from me.

Wasn't in the best shape, rust on the rear quarters, tears in the roof, and so on.

5th gear melted on the highway back from Edmonton. After 320,000km's.

Then I made two more roundtrips (to and from edmonton) with only 4 gears. Ruined the main seal. Started to leak quite badly.

Posted a note on a forum for anyone who wanted the car could come and get it. We had called the Kidney Foundation, to come on the Wednesday (we parked the car in front of our garage, in the alley, on Sunday) just in case no-one came to get it in the mean time.

Kidney folk called us on Wednesday saying they were behind our house (we were away at the time) and that they couldn't find the car. So we assumed someone had come and picked it up.

Turns out the Government was called, they came and towed it, claimed to send us a letter which we signed for. We did not, and they couldn't provide proof that we actually did. Anyways since we didn't respond to the letter, they crushed it and sent us a bill for 200 beans. No warning, No Abandoned car notice, nothing. Just came and took it.

Was never really intending on selling that car. We were going to rebuild it. But then we bought another one already in much better shape, therefor this one was going to become a parts car. That thing was impressive how durable it was. I would often put 1200km's on it over a weekend. Driving from Edmonton to Fernie and back. With two torn CV boots.

                No, mang, that's false.

George uses Castrol Syntec, OEM VW/Audi spec stuff.

He and I have debated this stuff for years, and I respect his position saying that nobody has yet to prove to him with data that any other oil is better or worse. Rather, it's the stuff that gets installed at factory so that's what he sells to customers.

However, he's been known to set me up with ELF oil from time to time. Nowadays, in my B6 1.8t I've been using Total Quartz Energy 9000. Total's Ineo MC-3 Energy 9000 is also high quality from what I can gather from the spec sheets.

Change every 6,000 km - 7,000 km, with 60% or more highway.

Either way, here's a cross-post to the research I started a while back... hope it helps.
