  • Tip to 5 speed swap possible on B5 1.8T?

Not to be busting nothing77's styles, but his tranny swap has got me wondering what would be necessary to do a 5 speed (not 6) on my B5 1.8T

The parts I know I'd need are a transmission (duh), clutch/flywheel, axles, clutch hydraulic cylinders, pedal assembly, shifter assembly.

What I'm not sure of is if I need to change the crankshaft and the ECU. Although the ECU will need to be changed at some point to keep it from throwing a perpetual CEL because of the lack of a TCU to talk to.

I realize that it's a pretty daunting prospect. However, I gotta have some kind of hair brained scheme in the back of my mind

    Crankshaft - probably not.

ECU - definitely need to change the code.

You'll probably need a drive shaft in addition to the half shafts, and possibly a rear diff as well.

      crank-def no
      ECU-def yes
      Rear diff-yes
      Propshaft-yes
      Front Axles-yes

      and yes to everything else

      Swap is very possible
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that it's a FWD. That makes my life quite a bit easier. As for the automatic crankshaft there's no pilot hole or anything else that it's missing vis a vis a manual crankshaft? I seem to remember that on the 1.8T's you can change from auto to manual or manual to auto but you can't do both. I'm almost thinking it may be worth keeping an eye out for a written off B5 with no front end damage. It'll probably be cheaper than sourcing out all the parts individually and it would give me a parts car should the need arise.
