  • Starter problem

    Hey.
I have been having problems with my starter i had it rebuilt and the problem keeps happening. I can hear the starter spinning but its not turning over the engine. The motor is not bound up i turned it by hand. I don't know what the problem is its not my wiring because i can hear it spinning.
Does anyone in Edmonton have a spare starter for the 2000 S4? it would help if you knew the starter was good too.

Sounds like the starter is spinning fine, but you're missing the electrical signal to the solenoid.

      Re: Starter problem

I pulled my starter out and hooked if back up to the wires that connect it to the car and turned the ignition. The solenoid pushed out the gear and it spins fine.

Does the starter not turn the engine over ever? Or is the problem intermittent?

            Re: Starter problem

Sounds to me like a bad connection with the solenoid. Obviously testing the starter out of the car once doesn't mean that the solenoid kicks the gear out properly all the time...

Instead of the solenoid signal wire that comes from the ECU, run a wire from the starter to the positive terminal on the battery, and over the course of a week every time you start the car do so by turning the key on and touching that wire to the battery. If it works every time, then you know the stock wiring to the starter has a bad connection.

                Re: Starter problem

Okay so i was just in the garage i had the starter in the car and i left the signal wire off like you said. I ran a wire from the battery to the start and it just did the same thing. u can hear the solenoid push the gear out because it makes like a noise when it pushes out and then comes back. So doing the jumper didn't work either and i tried a few times with no results

That's really odd. If you've determined that the signal wire isn't the problem, and that the solenoid and the starter motor are both working properly, then the only thing left is to take the trans off and make sure the starter is engaging the FW correctly.

Also, perhaps sometimes the solenoid is failing to push the starter gear out far enough....

                    Re: Starter problem

Ya i think before i take the trans off i want to try another starter to eliminate the possibility that the starter isn't working properly. That's why i'm looking for a starter here in Edmonton so i don't have to wait for shipping.

BTW, the solenoid on that starter is about a year old. I rebuilt it myself.

I think that I might have a used starter in my box of old goodies
