  • Anyone here using a tip chip?

So quick rundown: I'm running a setup that's probably making 250-275 HP. I have a tip tranny w an upgraded ITP torque converter. Now, under full throttle I can feel a delay in the tranny internals hooking up. It's not an RPM flare, but it's like a slight loss of power (RPM's are still rising) and then back to full power.

Long story short. In the interest of prolonging the life of my clutch packs I'm considering adding a tip chip to the mix. Who here has tried one, and was the difference that noticeable. I just don't want to dump the cash into a product that only offers a marginal improvement.

A lot of the S4/A6 guys here have gotten a VAST TIP chip from me, and in the cars I've driven that had it, it made quite a noticeable difference. The driver has much more control and the shifts are crisper and cleaner.

How long is the install on that? I might be interested when I come to calgary. the TIP on my allroad is a bit sluggish. if you qualify a bit as something the size of a housing complex.

also what kind of cost is associated?

            wow, cheap.

i still wonder why these things are just.. options on the car. i mean from a consumer point of view you'd think Audi would just.. make the car as awesome as they could. But then I remember that average drivers are somewhat dangerous to begin with.

is that ten minutes worth it?

i find that the TIP doesn't react or shift nearly as quickly or as crisply as I'd like, and it's been a good 5 years since I've driven a manual, but I recall being able to shift pretty fluidly and the car would react almost instantly.

At the same time, I drive a lot in downtown vancouver, and it's so stop and go, and I'm a big guy, 6'6" and shifting on the clutch constantly is harder because my knees are as high as the steering wheel, even in the a6/AR body.

Re: Anyone here using a tip chip?

So can you do an AEB 1.8T chip on site or do I have to mail it? Also, if I understand correctly is the VAST chip completely different than the GIAC tip chip? Finally, do you have anything in the line of technical specs. i.e. to what degree the shift times are reduced?

My parents have a tip Boxster (heresy I know) However, it's a good point of comparison as it has exactly the same gearbox. However Porsche did to their valve bodies and software what VW/audi should have done from the beginning. The shifts are immediate and crisp. I don't know that that sort of response is achievable on the VW/Audi tips without altering physical aspects of the gearbox (i.e. valve bodies). However I'm using this as my benchmark for what a tip should do.

PS: my TC's stall speed is 800 RPM above stock. Will that be a factor? I pretty much drive in tip mode all the time so I don't think it will matter.

jordan how much for it? i may put one in the AR..

driving camping on the weekend i would always have to toss the car into sport mode or tip mode and downshift to 3-4 to pass people..

yeah the regular drive on the AR tip doesn't react very well to those types of situations unless you tell it exactly what to do, but even then it doesn't react that quickly. I find also that if I drive aggressively for 20 seconds to get passed some idiots (Vancouver is chock full) the car will continue to rev up to 4 or 5 thousand RPM's before shifting when I go back to driving regularly. it's bizarre.
