  • Allroad Turbo Project

Turbos began to be very loud throughout the rev range at any boost level so I have decided to replace them.

I have started removing my engine in preparation for the new turbos, clutch, mounts, inlets, etc.

Here is what I have done so far:

Now for the life of me I can't pull the engine out far enough to get to the clutch slave cylinder.. I even have the drive axles out, still hung up on something.
From the above pictures, could it be the drive shaft that hanging me up?
    Any hints?

Im doing this at my house.

Right now it's not looking like K04s

Exhaust for an allroad is way to much, Ill probable do something custom.

Hey Graeme, do you ever NOT take any of your cars apart? Seems like you are always tinkering on something...

graeme the allroad exhausts are not that much $$.. they are the same as the a6 ones from what i've been reading.. i just want bigger tips on the back really and more grunty from it.. i only drive mine once in a while but it needs to be sportier

milltek and apr make them that i know of.. or custom i spose yea

are you going tial's too then? glad your 6spd can take it.. poor lil tip would blow apart lol

oh check this AR out for some fun

Looking at RS6s at the moment. We'll see.

Id like to do a custom exhaust.

Reason Im doing it before the turbos totally pack it in is that I don't want them to pack it in half way to Vancouver.

                Re: Allroad Turbo Project

The drive axle isn't hanging you up. You're most likely being screwed over by the trans mounts. Have you checked to see if they are completely clearing the sub-frame?

RS6's are a happy place to be because they are the upper limit of what the stock engine will do. If you go any bigger (Tial, GT, SBT, etc) you'd need to do some fancy work with the engine internals.

BTW, did you disconnect the shifter rods?

Transmission mounts are out. Shifter rods are disconnected.

Could it be the transmission mount brackets maybe?

                    Re: Allroad Turbo Project

Doubt it. The only way to know for sure is to climb under the car and look at the engine and see what part of it is hitting the chassis. The usual culprits are the trans mounts and the front half-shafts...make sure the front half shafts are completely removed from the car.

Even with nothing binding, this engine takes quite a bit of force to pull from it's cradle. You may just need to pull harder or else ask a buddy to come and help you tug on the hoist

                          Re: Allroad Turbo Project

Problem was the drive shaft was stuck to the transmission. Took a good hour of pounding with various hammers and it finally popped off.

Today I got the engine and trans out, downpipes off, turbos off, engine separated from trans, clutch + FW and PP off.

                          That was it for today.

Good stuff. In your pictures above in the OP it looks like the drive shaft is completely disconnected from the trans (I think I can see the gasket!) so it didn't look like it was binding at all. That has happened to me once before (on Ryan's car, actually), and it took considerable pounding and prying to get it off. The grease must have dried up for it to bind like that...

                            Nice work today
