  • Audi RNS-E help needed

My car is a 2004 Audi S4 with the RNS-E upgrade. I did not install it. It was bought this way. It is missing a map disc and I also do not have the PIN# for it. The previous owner was no help at all in telling me what kind of unit it was or what kind of firmware, etc.

I am looking to get a map disc, find or create a new PIN#, and I would like to add iPod integration, an add-on DVD player, and video in motion. There are so many products out there and I do not know what I need.

I'm hoping someone local can help me scope things out and guide me in my quest to get this thing fully functional.

I have a Vag-Com if there is anything I can use it to look up on the RNS-E.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The wife wants to start listening to her iPod soon in the car and we would both like to get the nav working as soon as possible. These are our primary goals, with the rest being important eventually.

hrmm.. maybe call royal oak parts and ask for Erik and see if he can help source the map disk.. unless you can download them via torrents or something now?

I've thought about posting on QW, AudiForums or Audizine.

There is a LOT of information on the RNS-E swaps, functionality and add-ons. A lot of it is pretty technical and confusing. I've searched a lot and read quite a bit on the subject, but I can't say that it helped me much.

I see a lot of good questions about RNS-E and MMI being met with smart-ass replies about using the search button.

At the risk of being flamed as a retard newbie, I think I will give the post there a try....

Do you think the torrent thing would work, assuming I can find the map disc that way?

Hey I saw your post on Audizine, the only way to get the code is to have the dealer retrieve it, you cannot get it with vagcom. You can buy new disc from Navteq as their the ones that supply them to the dealers. You can also find them on ebay from time to time. I just did an RNS-E upgrade in my B6A4. I have another map disc but I'm not willing to part with it yet.

I found alot of helpful information at Audiforum.us there is a whole section dedicated to the RNS-E. Lots of useful info and fairly easy to follow.

I believe DubSport on here will sell you a copy of the map disc (2009 I believe, too). And yes, only the dealer can retrieve the code for you...and you can bet it won't be cheap.

                Thanks for the pointers, guys.

Got a copy of the newer disc and did software update and tried out nav, but it is not working yet. Not picking up any satellites for the GPS antenna. I think I know why.

I found the Kufatec antenna sitting in the glovebox.

Previous owner says "oh yeah..... I let my buddy switch his RNS-E in to try to trouble shoot his unit and then he switched back. I guess he forgot to hook the antenna up again." Nice. Before I bought the car, he told me that the RNS-E was fully functioning, when I specifically asked about it.

So, because I do not yet have the SAFE code for the RNS-E (haven't made it in to dealer yet for key programing and this task) I can't pull the head unit to verify this antenna thing is the issue yet.

                The saga continues.....

                  Re: Audi RNS-E help needed

$65 dollars for code retrieval. Not as bad as I thought it would be.

Key programming is worse. Over $100 flat rate. But if you have several keys to do at once like I do, the unit cost per key isn't too bad. I figure if I need to get spare keys, they may as well be transmitter keys.

In time, I'm sure either me or the wife will forget and leave a set of keys in clothing and wash them by accident. Or a kid will baptize them into a glass of water, or something. It has happened before....
