I was wondering about the pistons melting as well.. they typically arent the weak point since they come forged from the factory.. it would have to be pretty lean to melt them no?

      • Re: Project Tial650 S4 complete...

Not lean, just hot. Remember that there are a lot of factors that play into combustion chamber temperature. The stock exhaust manifolds, with their extremely limited flow, are definitely one of those factors, among many others.

VAST is building another motor, this time with 2.8L pistons. We're resetting the Tial WG's, contrary to Tial's recommendation, at a sedate 15psi. The setting that they suggested resulted in the WG break threshold being set at 27psi.

If it was caused by execess heat and not being lean why did only two pistions melt? I thought these cars had a "Limp" mode. So would this not have basicaly shut down the boost before anything melted? Are you guys going to change anything with the exhaust manifolds?

          • Re: Project Tial650 S4 complete...

Certain cylinders' exhaust flow is more restricted than others, heat from the turbos is closer to cylinders 3 and 6, etc. There are a few reasons that heat would be generated more in some cylinders than in others.

The engine build is being done by VAST, so I'm not sure what they're doing with the manifolds.

So then with 2.8 pistions and what ever elese the motor builder does do you expect to see higher awhp # Or about the same? Is there going to be that much of a difference with bigger pistions? What kind of boost is going to be run in this new motor.

Should be similar power, perhaps a bit more, but it'll be running 22-23psi and a lot more timing to get there.

Engine is still at VAST being built. Not sure about whether the Tials will stay or go, depends what Mark can work out with VAST.

So it's been a while since there has been any post about this car! I was just woundering if they're is any progress with it or has the owner given up?

Also since there were 2 melted pistions, was they're any other damage done to the motor like rods, valve damage?? It just seems it is takeing forever to see any results on this car.
