tick tick - from the rear, somewhere

My friend was driving beside me one day and said he heard a ticking noise from my rear.

On the drive to kelowna yesterday, the ticking is audible from inside now also.

I'm not sure what side it's coming from. It's a consistent tick. With every rotation of the wheel it ticks once.

My first thought was the spacers from my wheels; maybe a bolt was coming loose. My second thought is a half shaft. My third thought is a wheel bearing (but it ticks not grinds). My fourth thought it a rotor.

Here is the part that is tricking me... The tick is not present when driving perfectly straight. The tick only starts when i slighty turn each direction.

It's a pretty loud tick now. At least, after 6 hours it is driving me bonkers.

Today i'm going to jack up the car and rotate the wheel by hand. See if i can hear the tick that way. Maybe i can pin point it.

It does sound like an odd tick, especially coming from the rear when you turn. I would check the rear wheels/hub, as I am thinking the same as Ryan with a rear boot..

okay so my first thought was the most right .

so here's the scoop .. i got my rims from concept one . before i tell the story, i should say that they are good guys to deal with and were very helpful .

i got the wheels installed at concept one . i drove away and my driver rear wheel was vibrating and knocking . it happened just as i was getting to my office . i got out and shook the wheel, it wobbled so it was loose . i called Ken and he sent someone down to re-torque the bolts . he said the bolts were all torqued tight, but did it again anyway .

well, he was right! they have been torqued

but the bolts are too long for the spacers and those wheels. that's what i discovered today. you can torque the lugs as much as you want, but the wheels always wobble!

so i'm still in kelowna and leave tomorrow . i can't drive the way it is; wobbly wheels!

i'm going to canadian tire tomorrow and get a hand file and bring those lugs down a mm or two by hand . -OR- find a shop in this town that may have shorter lugs for me . but it'll be sunday so i'll be SOL .

By Hand? That will take you forever with a file. That sucks about the wobble though. Maybe you'll be lucky and find a garage open and you could use a bench grinder to shave off a couple of mm's. Good luck!

Sucks to hear DJ.... although I am relieved that nothing was wrong with the car. An easier solution (if possible) is to throw on another spacer... might be easier to find then either hand grinding or finding the proper length lugs.

This is the 3rd time someone has complained about concept1 in the last 2 weeks about bolts!

Those guys really could use a 'bolt specialist'

i went to canadian tire . bought a $59.99 wheel grinder . sat on my friends balcony and grinded all the lugs down 2 threads . wheels are fabulous now! even with canadian tire's awesome return policy, i think i'll keep the grinder to add to my useless tool collection lol.

i'm visiting concept 1 tomorrow to explain the situation. i'll tell ken how easy it will be for his boys to shake the wheel to ensure it's properly snug before letting the car leave.

it wasn't as if it was barely a proper fit. it was very noticeable. after a while on the highway, the noise got insane. and when the car was jacked, you could shake the wheel and watch it clunk back and forth. it was very clear what was wrong.

and it's been a noisy wheel ever since i got them put on. BUT, i didn't notice before because my back seats were always in upright position. they were down for this trip because i have one of my bikes in the trunk.

i'm glad i was safe and the wheel didn't fall off on the drive. i'm also glad i have some mechanical ability to solve the issue myself. i can only dred that most people would have continued to drive until the wheel fell off thinking if it was really that big of a deal that it'd make more noise.

OH and on a side note,
i had the hood up to refill windshield washer fluid today. and my friend asked where the squirters were for the water/meth. as i began to show him, i noticed one is missing! the passenger side squirt nozzle is missing and there is a dime sized hole in the intake pipe lol. (that explains my poor fuel economy lately). the hose going to the nozzle is cut also. looks like it popped out of the pipe and fell into the fan at some point. the fan cut off the nozzle and who knows where it ended up. sadly, it probably has something to do with concept 1's work on my steering rack replacement job.

i temporarily patched the hole with a plastic bolt cover, some silicon, duct tape and a zip tie

Wow.......sounds like Concept1 has there 5hit together.

Since I've lived in Calgary, I have heard lots of bad and little good about them. I know a great guy who used to work for ken but had a disagreement or something and left. He has since opened his own shop complete with a Dyno and 4 or 5 hoists. His name is Lawerence and his shop is called Calgary Autoworks. He's a very smart car guy and knows his business well. He is amost finished building his 97 GTI VR6T with AWD and close to 700WHP. He had managed to get the 2.8L block bored to a 3.7L. I would go to him before i would go to Concept1. And he's only a 1 min. drive away from Concept.

Holy crap. Im not sure how a steering rack replacement would have affected that nozzle, but they both had JB weld and were threaded into the bi-pipe. Something pretty significant would have had to hit the nozzle. There should be extra hosing in that rubbermaid container I gave you, and if not I will have it around my garage. As for the nozzle, it will have to be ordered via VAST performance (The Jerbel on here) or Devils Own...
If you choose to take it off completely the stock inlet pipes are in that box, or you could have the APR unit welded.
