B5 A4 gas filling problem

So new to my sister 98 A4, i remove the gas cap like normal and gas sprays out every where. quickly i learn to crack it until i hear no more venting, anyways, when filling the car it clicks like every few seconds as if the tank is full. you have to slowly fill it with the nozzle barely in, or else it sprays out.
takes for ever, and ive never experienced a car with this problem before.

any insight on this?
previous owner mentioned the gas filling problem but its really annoying.

never had a problem like that in the 2 b5's i've encountered, maybe some else can chime in?

your breather/vent line is plugged or pinched off.(may require partially dropping the gas tank)

There is some discussion around this on the tex abour B5.5 Passats with this issue as well.

Mine had it and it was the charcoal filter. Unfortunately it took three months to fix because everytime the dealer thought they had it, they had to fill it up. I don't drive a lot so I would have to go through a tank of gas, realize the problem was still there, and take it in again.

Both the A4 and S4 have that problem occasionally there is a Shell over here that it always happens at but if you turn the nozzel sideways and half pull it out it works fine just move it around a little and it normally will start to work.

I replaced the carbon canister because i was told it was full of gas, and went to put some gas in right after. Problem is still happening. Which of the 3 lines going into the canister is the one that could be the clogged or pinched?

Drop the tank..no choice,may require a new one as well.
