  • Oil Change from Hell!

Just wanted to do a quick oil change and get home for the xmas season.

Wouldn't you know it, I pulled too hard on the oil filter and crushed the son of a gun!

After doing what I could to try and coax the thing off, I noticed something else. A sort of something that led me to stop short and take a photo to get an answer.

As of now I'm going nowhere until I either get some answers/solutions or a tow back to the stealership.

(Had a coil blow and for whatever reason my spares didn't work (too cold?). They replaced it later with one of my spares and fixed the coolant drain plug which was sweating/leaking, flushed the coolant and replaced it with the proper spec (G12). Cost me nearly seven hundred bones.)

I noticed that there seems to be a bolt or plug missing from this spot in the photo. Anyone know what is the solution to my problems (both the oil filter and plug)?

Anyone in Edmonton who could give me a hand?

    Cheers, and TIA!! [wrench]

It's no Biggie....pretty sure it's just a access hole to the flywheel.

Stab the oil filter with a screwdriver, then wrench it off. It's a messy way to do it, but it works.

Wow, this hummer is some tight.

I swear that the thing is fused on via electrolysis and thus caused the crushed effect as a result... because even with the screwdriver in, it's SOLID.

            Looking for a snipe.

You know Ryan, it's some comforting to know you're trolling ED and I always get an answer from you. Even nigh on the holiday season.

              Cheers.

                Re: Oil Change from Hell!

Looks like a flywheel sensor hole to me. Not used in this incarnation of the engine/tranny combination. You can tell that there was nothing there from the factory by the condition of the hole (really dirty) and the condition of the threads. Besides, if there was something there it wouldn't work anymore, and it would most likely still be hanging by the connector wires.

                  Re: Oil Change from Hell!

Good call about the dirty threads. A plate or whatever may have been left off after a service or repair. It's worth looking into but probably not the biggest issue right now.

If you can manage to get a pipe-wrench on the rim of the filter that may be enough to get the it off. If possible, heating the filter (ideally without heating up the block too) would loosen the threads a little.

700 for a coolant repair... that seems pretty steep... I see what you mean by oil change from hell

                    Re: Oil Change from Hell!

Should I clean it out and cover it over to prevent further contamination?

EDIT: I don't have a pipe wrench or set of water-pump pliers (channel-locks) big enough to do the job.

Considering calling in a tow first thing in the AM.

                    Last call?

                      Re: Oil Change from Hell!

If you don't have access to a wrench that can grip the rim of the filter then a tow sounds like your best bet. The dealership can then tell you exactly what is supposed to screw into your empty threads.

I have a bently copy on an inoperable computer so I can't look it up for you but it might be worth adding to the thread once you find out.

                      Best of luck.

stab a screwdriver through the filter. its not that difficult and will solve your situation saving you a tow

                          Have done so.

                          Didn't work, yet.

In fact, I tried again and bent the screwdriver.

                          Next suggestion?
