  • Audi TT-RS Details

    Good News:

Full details of the new Audi TT RS have leaked onto the internet. The document is intended for German dealerships and confirms that the fastest TT will get a 2.5-litre five-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged TFSI engine producing 335bhp and 332lb ft of torque. Power for the Audi TT RS will be fed through a six-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels through Audi’s Quattro system, with a bias towards the rear wheels. Audi claims that this will propel the car to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and return more than 28mpg on average. There are no details disclosed about whether the Audi TT RS will lose the standard TT’s magnetic dampers in favour of more track-oriented suspension nor whether ceramic brakes will be an option. The Cayman-rival Audi TT RS will arrive earlier than previously expected. Both the roadster and coupe TT RS will be launched in summer next year, so expect UK models to hit the showrooms before the end of 2009. Our spy shots show that the Audi TT RS will gain a deeper front splitter and rear diffuser. A black grille with an aluminium surround will also add to the aggressive styling. The leaked document does not specify prices, but expect to pay around £45,000 for the Audi TT RS coupe and a further £2000 for the cabriolet.

    Better News:
Same engine is "supposedly" also going into the 2010 VW R42.

Can't wait to see more details on both cars as they become available.

    335bhp ? They were saying 350-370 :(

335 hp doesn't make it as appealing.

I have seen 340hp and 332 ft/lbs as the numbers.

Should be nice with a chip though!

        4.5 sec 0-60

        The Carrera S is 355hp 0-60 in 4.6s

Admittedly the Audi is probably 10% lighter weight

I actually think that either Porsche is conservative or Audi is exaggerating the 0-60 time.

              After all the R8 is powered by a 4.2 L V8 420 hp 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

Definitely should be closer to 4.8-4.9s but for sure under 5s based on the paper specs.

I guess it comes down to price then. This car better be under 75K US otherwise I think most people would take the 911. Also the Cayman S is getting a 20hp bump for 09 with the addition of DFI. This should make it competitive with the TT-RS too and cheaper than the 911.

I thiink a lot can come down to the bias of the AWD system as well.. and If its an agressively tuned boost profile that torque will come on strong if you launch in the sweet spot.
(Thinking to Stage 3 B5 S4's.. about 450-500 hp, and 0-60 is less then 4.5 and they are pigs, but the torque hits hard if launched properly)

500hp aftermarket built car is much different than 335 hp at the crank bone stock car! AWD usually helps most with launches under less than ideal conditions but on totally clean dry flat surfaces, not sure that RWD with big tires isn't the same.

                    Latest News

"While it may not make it to U.S. shores, the TT-RS will pack a 2.5-liter TFSI five-cylinder producing 340 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, which will be mated to a six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel-drive. 0-60 times for the TT-RS are expected to drop down to 4.5"

"Audi announced today that pricing for its U.S.-spec TT-S will begin at $45,500 for the Coupe. Based on past pricing decisions, rumors put the TT-RS at $55-$60,000. "

Okay thats a pretty good price then!! Too bad it looks like no show in Canada and the US.

Wow this sounds like a very cool car indeed. Getting back to their roots with the 5cyl and dual charged could be a tuners wet dream. I hope we get it as I would certainly be interested in checking it out.

2010 Audi TT RS - Car News
Audi gives its sporty little TT a high five (cylinder).

Five-cylinder engines have long been an Audi trademark. First used in 1977 in the Audi 100/5000, five-cylinders took Audi upmarket and clearly differentiated the brand from the competition. The Audi 200 Turbo, with its 170-hp inline-five, became the world's fastest four-door in 1984; the 315-hp, Audi 80–based RS2 Avant of the mid-‘90s was the most extreme station wagon of its time; and Audi won several rally championships with the five-banger Quattro—the S1 Pikes Peak had almost 600 hp.

In the mid-‘90s, Audi dropped the five-cylinder engine and its characteristic, subdued growl in favor of more conventional four-cylinder and V-6 engines. Brand aficionados howled in futile protest, and engineering guru Ferdinand Piëch, who had developed the five-cylinder engine but later moved on to become head of VW, said he never quite understood why the engine had been dropped.

                        It’s Back!

As of March 2009, a five-cylinder will be back in Audi's range in the form of a 2.5-liter unit with direct injection; it is based on Audi's modular engine architecture. The transversely mounted engine is force-fed by a single turbocharger and will make 330–340 hp. Torque is rumored to be around 330 lb-ft. That's enough to significantly set the TT RS apart from the lesser TTS with its 265-hp, 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine.

The TTS coupe is claimed to run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and the fixed-roof TT RS—which will be built as either a 2+2 coupe or roadster—should jet to 60 at least a half a second quicker. If customers request it, top speed will be raised to 174 mph; the TTS is governed to 155. Curb weight will be around 3000 lb and Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard. Power will be transmitted through a six-speed manual transmission; it is unlikely that the dual-clutch transmission will be adapted to the TT RS.

Expect minor but significant changes to set the TT RS apart from the TTS. It needs even more air, so the front intakes will be larger, and it will sport the two large oval exhaust tips which identify Audi's RS models.

                        Headed For a Geneva Debut

Just a few months back, a tussle strained Audi and Porsche's high-tension relationship even further: Porsche threatened to take legal action against Audi's use of the RS moniker. Porsche had long ago managed to protect the RS nameplate for its exclusive use and allowed Audi to use it only in conjunction with a number, as on the RS 4, RS 6, and so on. Audi engineers went ballistic, and Porsche backpedaled, allowing the TT RS to keep its name. Listen for a five-cylinder rumble at the 2009 Geneva auto show next March, which is where the TT RS is scheduled to make its first public appearance.
