A lot of companies are still using the tip unfortunately. I wish it was "dead" but it's still being made. I would be way less tempted by a passat in a year or so if Volvo made a DSGish transmission but they still have a tip like auto with torque converter. BMW has SMG but I don't see a BMW in my future given the price.
I still really like the 6spd in my V50 but cruising around in a DSG A3 last weekend really made me think about getting a VAG car for the tranny alone. Except then I found out the 2 year old "4ringer" had faulty Air Conditioning which made me think twice
Edit: Tip vs. 6spd I'd say probably 6spd, I still really love the predictability of knowing exactly how your car will react when you hit the throttle. But it's ultimately what you can live with. Like Smarty, manual can be a huge pain in traffic which some people deal with daily.
