Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

A lot of companies are still using the tip unfortunately. I wish it was "dead" but it's still being made. I would be way less tempted by a passat in a year or so if Volvo made a DSGish transmission but they still have a tip like auto with torque converter. BMW has SMG but I don't see a BMW in my future given the price.

I still really like the 6spd in my V50 but cruising around in a DSG A3 last weekend really made me think about getting a VAG car for the tranny alone. Except then I found out the 2 year old "4ringer" had faulty Air Conditioning which made me think twice

Edit: Tip vs. 6spd I'd say probably 6spd, I still really love the predictability of knowing exactly how your car will react when you hit the throttle. But it's ultimately what you can live with. Like Smarty, manual can be a huge pain in traffic which some people deal with daily.

          Hey Jason,
Just so you know, the auto in the passat is not DSG. Its just a 6 speed tiptronic!!

good to know, I thought the 2.0t was getting DSG? That's disappointing.

Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

The only real driving experience ive had in a TIP audi is my momma's wagon...and frankly, i hated it. Im pretty sure once i got used to the lag in between shifts (maybe its not THAT bad, but it felt like an eternity after driving a stick for years) i wouldnt have such a strong distaste, but the fact that it has noticeable lag to me is unacceptable.

...I would however rock a DSG..again, not over a stick, but if I had to go auto, itd be DSG 1000%

                  The_Jerbel and Billesberger,

both cars quite nice. I didn't notice turbo timer or alarm/starter in your postings. I guess one car let the car warm up, and let it idle 30 secs before shut down?

Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

Or just drive it out of boost for the last 5 mins or so.....

( For long highway trips I usually let it idle for 5 mins or so... Im often up in Windermere)
The Audi factory alarm is decent enough.... although if you know what you are doing its not that tough to get in.

Like Mark said, you don't NEED a turbo timer...just make sure you let the thing cool down for a couple minutes, or drive easy for the last little bit of your cruise

Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

Yeah, I ALWAYS let the oil temp get up to 80*C before going WOT, and I ALWAYS drive the car out of boost for the last couple minutes of the trip, and then let the car run for a minute before shutting it off.

Factory alarm is quite good, as stated above.
