  • B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

Is there much performance difference between the auto and manual B5 S4?
Personally I prefer the stick but if a good deal comes about on a tiptronic I might go that route.

If one was to go Stage I+, would the auto transmission handle it?

    No offense to tip owners...

But tip is a dead technology now and buying it is IMO a bad decision.

Just hurts your resale compared to cars with newer transmission technology, and is less satisfying to drive too.

In 5 years people will look back on tiptronic the way that we look back on crank-up windows, carburetors, etc

yea dual clutch is the future fah sho!

i wouldn't trade my 6spd for anything and yes a stage1 with a chip the auto is fine.. you can rock a stage 3 for a while and it'll work

kyle knows for sure as he has a tip and is building his stage 3 right now but he's upgraded his tranny

Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

No offense taken, alot of people hate TIPs with a passion lol.

I, on the other hand, do not. I drive in traffic WAY too much (one of the main reasons I sold my GLI) which led me on my search for a TIP S4.

With just a chip you should be fine with a TIP, but be warned, the TC can and will give out at any time REGARDLESS of how much power you're pushing through...it was just a bad design from the beginning. Once I'm done with my install (which will be as soon as my ECU arrives, everything else is done), I should have the closest feeling thing to a DSG tranny without actually having the technology. With the combination of a beefed up TC and a re-worked valve body to go along with a VAST TIP chip, my shift times should be considerably shorter than before. Oh, and my new paddle shift wheel will make it feel that much better too

Yes, tiptronic is a dead technology, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon if that is all you have to start with. There are alot of companies coming out with "upgrade" parts for the ZFHPL19 (A6 & S4 2.7T's) and the ZFHPL24 (4.2's) so you should see them becoming more stable at higher power ratings...but only time will tell.

Bottom line, ONLY buy a TIP if that's what you really want...not if you're going to be crying for a 6sp in 2 months. I personally don't think I would trade my TIP for a manual...but that's just me, and I'm crazy lol!

          true kyle..

shiz the RS6 came with only a Tip!

the next 4ringer for myself/wifey may be a tip/dsg if we can't find what we want in a manual

Many people think I'm more than a little crazy lol.

I have no idea where that ECU is...it's been almost two weeks! I e-mailed Prince today but he didn't get back to me.

Oh, and another note about "dated" technology...any car that is pushing ten years old is going to have it's share of dead technology. To me, that isn't an excuse not to buy a vehicle. I'm pretty sure my 71' Cuda doesn't have power windows and other electronic gizmos to play with, but that sure as hell doesn't mean it's not fun to drive

Re: B5 S4 tiptronic vs manual

I have a Stage 1 Tip and I am pining after a 6 speed. I have the OC.t TCU in it, but honestly don't notice that much of a difference. Minor issues bug me like that automatic upshift to 2nd unless you are at WOT. Let me choose my own gear, thank you! If I want to crawl in traffic in 1st....let me! (I know it's a VAG-COM adjustment, but I don't have the code to access the TCU yet).

I think I need to meet Kyle at some point and learn more about what he's done to upgrade his TIP. I don't know if I'll ever go stage 3, but I could see 1+ or 2 in my future...

Won't make it to the meet...sorry Ryan.

Jeff, like you said, all you need to do to stop the automatic upshift into 2nd is recode your TCU through VAG-COM. I think the "default" tranny coding is 00002, and if you re-code it to 00032 you can hold first gear right through redline
