  • Rear bumpsteer???

So my buddy who owns my old 97 A4 frontrak is complaining about rear bumpsteer....and I experienced it yesterday in his car so I guess he's not crazy.

When he hits a bump sometimes the rear of the car will fishtail a little bit so its kinda creepy in the dry and definitely concerning in the wet and slush.

Does anyone know what is causing this? It just started maybe a month or two ago....car is lowered on FK race springs with HiTec shocks....

I was thinking maybe rear toe out needs adjusting but since its a Frontrak, it has a torsion beam rear suspension -- I don't think those have toe/camber adjustment do they??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks!

    Re: Rear bumpsteer???

If it has the torsion beam rear end, I'd bet that his rear axle bushings are shot. Once those go, the car tends to feel a little squirly in the back end.

Possibly bad shock(s), could be loose suspension components (jack it up and see if any of the wheels seem to have any play), might have hit a curb before and toe is out now possibly is he getting some unusual wear pattern on any tires you should be able to spot if one wheel is out to lunch due to this.

I would guess bad rear shocks as well. Test them to make sure they still have good rebound.
Also the rear axle bushings is another good option.
I've seen the symptoms you describe in both situations.
