  • Mini Clubman Discussion

Well we had a little info about this in the 135 thread so I thought I would start a new topic to keep things separate.

Now my wife and I are considering a new vehicle for 2009 (about a year from now) and the Clubman keeps popping up as a possibility. The background info is that the Smart is our only car and we are looking for something that can handle another passenger and maybe some practical space. We have gotten very used to the Smart and are fairly efficient with a small car and that is something we really like, so a larger sedan is not really what we want at all. Another issue is we live downtown and have 1 parking stall, but the good news is our stall is extra long (around 22-24 feet) and so we ideally would like to keep the smart and have the second car snuggle up to it in the spot which really limits the size of the car to around 12-14 feet.

Now after seeing the Clubman at the car show I was not overly wowed or dismayed, the wheelbase is only 3inches longer than a regular Mini so we are not talking miles longer, but the backseat is a lot more comfortable and the third door makes it pretty easy to get in and out. The back area is still pretty small, but if you folded a portion of the back seat you would have a fair amount of space.

The other biggest issue is price, Mini's are not cheap

    Cooper Clubman starts at $26,400
Cooper Clubman S starts at $31,500

I am looking at $35,000 for the car I want a fair amount of money. Now I think other cars that meet my requirements are a Fit and Yaris but I think comparing those is hard, sure they are only 20,000, but neither has 172 hp, features like Xenon lights, LSD, 17" wheels etc.

So I guess I am just looking at thoughts, opinions and suggestions if you care to participate.

I think colour selection can really make or break the look of this car, so my choice would be to go more mono-tone and classy, and be the Smarts twin

    And simple black cloth interior

It's really such a personal preference issue. I've never been the biggest fan of Mini's as a whole, but the new Clubman looks to be very practical. It seems that for within your niche (nice small car), the choices are very limited, and the Mini is somewhat in a class of it's own.

I would definitely stick with Black/Greyish though.

Or just wait until the guys at MIT finish production on their "stackable downtown car". It looks

Personally I did not like the clubman look so much. Improving it with a dark color (mono black or dark grey) and dark window tint may help the looks. I do not like the silver/blue two tone of the Cooper S from the show. It could be a good car but don't get it unless you love it.

I have, and been in one a number of times. They handle awesome, so fun on the corners. This was a supercharged S. I bet the new 170hp turbo's would be even more fun.

I drove a first year one way back and I was not blown away at the time but I will be going to drive a Clubman in the next couple months to see how they feel and I think the turbo will be fun, as some people say it is a little underrated at 172hp and there is lots of torque too.

Are these (Clubman) on the road? I know for sure I saw one driving down John Laurier yesterday. I was right behind it and then I passed it on the right, it wasn't badged but it WAS a Clubman, red on the bottom, white or cream on the roof.

I am registered for the Clubman Challenge next week, get to try one against a Mazda 3, GTI 5 Door and C30 apparently, so I will get some good comparison.

I was at the Challenge at 8:00am at COP, personally the Clubman was fun (Type S only) but not quite fun enough or really anything else for my taste. However the C30 and Mazda 3 Speed were both more of a let down then anything else. It also felt as if the GTI was lacking power, must've been the fact it was an Automatic.

I will say this though, the Clubman was fun to take on a track and the guys who put on the show did a good job. Albeit somewhat forced.

I enjoyed the GTI the most of the cars, and compared to a Clubman S better value I think.

I found the exact opposite. I had heard how great the handling on Mini's was and when I took a Cooper S for a test drive I was very dissapointed. If you check out the numbers they get killed in handling by pretty much every sport compact out there.

This is for the Supercharged version from an Edmunds test:
