  • Two for Two

Ugh. Two cold days, two "broken" items.

Yesterday, I started my day with a burned out headlight. Not the end of the world, but a PITA to change when it's so cold (thus, it's not changed yet).

This morning, well let's just say I'm worried. Driving along Memorial heading east towards Centre Street when the car develops this pulsing squeal from the front right wheel area. Speed dependent, was rather loud to start and then got quieter as I reluctantly finished my drive to work. I am thinking CV joint, but who knows. Assuming it is the CV joint, now that it's fooked, is there any serious harm (additional harm) to come from driving on it?

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
    Jeff

        Re: Two for Two

sounds cv'ish to me, but squealing is a bit odd...definately could be caused by the rediculous temperatures though. If it does get REALLY fooked, you'll be looking at a new axle...

Does it change if you brake? Could it be a rock in your pad?

I'm thinking something brake related as well. Could possibly be bearing related, but probably not your axle.

Sorry about your luck Jeff, bad weather is very hard on cars. Possibly a sticky brake causing the squeal in this bad weather. Could you feel it at all? (Through the floorboards or steering wheel) It is speed dependant and not rev dependant your saying correct. Good luck and keep us informed I'll try to help you best I can.

Was starting to think on the "rock in the pad" possibility as well, but the way it came on, I'm not thinking so.

Can't feel it at all, was just a noise that made me turn off my radio and listen to confirm it was my car. Was hard to judge in traffic how braking affected it. I was reluctant to turn to lock in either direction when parking...as my mind was very strongly at "CV" at that point. I may run down to Chinook Centre at lunch to run an errand and can see what it's doing to me.

Maybe I'll see if George has time for a road-test or to throw in on the hoist really quick to have a peek for the "obvious".

Shall we start a pool on what breaks tomorrow?

i have a scary one for you.. i had a brake come loose last summer and grind on the wheel.. i was driving and could hear this metal grinding sound down by the wheel.. i was like WTF.. then i parked and drove slow and it was LOOOUUD.. i jacked up the car and noticed the wheel and brake were touching each other when rotating! the damn holding pin in the hub/caliper was missing and the brake was loose.. i replaced reinstalled wheel and good to go.. oh yea and fixed the paint on the caliper that was worn off

i would guess rock got caught between the shield and rotor not the pad.

I think we have a winner!

The noise "cleared" before I even got it to TuneDub. Makes total sense that it was a rock. What an ugly, ugly noise, though.
