  • Couple Questions About a4

I plan on buying a 2001 1.8t a4 in the next 2 months or so
i want to upgrade the the turbo, and add a few mods too it
and maybe getting it pushing out about 18-20psi
i know its going to take a bit of money and a lot of rebuilding the engine(or so ive heard)
but i was just wondering what exactly will need to get done and what some good companys are for the parts

    1. What are your goals
    2. What is your budget

You can do anything with infinite money.

300hp reliably will cost you $5-$6,000 I guess.

    Here you go

    http://goapr.com/Audi/products/stage3_trans.html

if you only want around 200-210ish hp, you can spend much less

My goals are to have a fun and quick car
and yea i was looking around 300hp or so
and my budget is about 8grand
i was told though if i upgrade the turbo, in order to get full potential
i would have to replace the cams, rods, pistons, etc.. or basically rebuild the top half of the engine
im a noob at this stuff

Well the kit above advertises nearly 300hp and you don't need anything else and won't need to upgrade your engine internals or the head. Its probably the best regarded, most reliable kit for the 1.8T.

This kit advertises 333hp for a little more money:

        http://goapr.com/Audi/products/stage3plus_b5a4.html

Also does not require any engine work. However, this is about as far as you can go without building the engine. And realistically, those numbers are at the crank so, this is around 300 at the wheels for around $5500 USD.

Also remember this does NOT include labour costs, which could be 10-15 hours of work at $100+ per hour for a professional. It also does NOT require a full turbo back exhaust replacement which you would also need to buy.

So that would be close to $8 grand all in and you would have a very quick A4

Are you sure you don't want to just sell your A4 now and buy an S4? Faster car with more potential.

        Hope this gets you started.

If you do want to build the engine, all you really need are new rods to be good for ~400hp, but mostly people replace rods and pistons together. With stronger rods and pistons and the right turbo setup you can do very well.

But remember if your car is FWD it will not be very drivable beyond 300hp anyway, you will just be building a dyno queen.

Also you will possibly burn out your clutch with so much power so will need a new clutch too!

Yeah honestly you should buy an S4. Its going to be less headache and a better faster car in the end?

It'll be more car for less money in the end. If you still want to spend money on it you can get some serious performance for the same amount of money as you would have spent on the A4

                    Re: Couple Questions About a4

I came from an APR Stage 3+ A4 to my Stage 3 S4.. and both cars are great. The APR kit is top notch!
Also when looking at the prife of that kit, remember that you would also need:
                    -Clutch (500-800)
                    -Exhaust (1k)
                    -Suspension is reccomended (1k)
-and at a minimum upgraded Rotors and pads. ($500)

Another option that should be coming out shortly is a GT28 kit with Autospeed... not officially released yet, but they are known for making several high power S4's. Think their site is www.Autospeed.us

                        Re: Couple Questions About a4

Well you could get your S4 out of town? It would maybe be worth the hassle.

Also if you do build up an A4, the APR Stage 3+ with exhaust, clutch, and labour is definitely going to be stretch your 8 grand and maybe go over.

I don't know if you'd need new rotors but new brake pads might be safe and if you don't upgrade the suspension you will get a lot of wheel hop and spin with so much power. You might also need new engine mounts and transmission mounts. And possibly things like a boost gauge... well you can see that it adds up FAST and you need a lot of upgrades.

The A4 would be a fast car though for sure.

You could also think about doing a different 1.8T since its the same engine... a Mk4 Golf or Jetta would cost a lot less than an A4 and you would have more money to modify the car.

You can get some good deals on S4's in Calgary if you're patient. Audone and I both got our cars for 19-20g if I remember correctly.

....less headache aside from having all of the A4's problems....plus S4-specific ones...

I know, you are talking about less headaches for big power.

If you can afford an S4 do it (which, if you look at a 2001 A4 with low km's, plus 8k, you might as well buy an S4).

hey audified, do you homework and buy a used S4 from the states, I work with a guy you just brought up a B7 a4 and he highly recommends the process, he said it was very easy, just do your homework ahead of time and find out what you need to get it across the border.
