    Re: Santa came early!

Interesting thought on the timing belt, but isn't it waaaay early? I found a maintenance interval on the web that shows timing belt at around 180k. Seems to be too far out, but I'm thinking the 84,500km on the car is way early for doing it.

    Thoughts?

Also, everybody is talking about getting a boost gauge, but can't you get boost pressure through the computer somehow? My 1991 Corrado G60 had some "tricks" to the trip computer and you could get way more info off of it (including boost pressure) than is normally advertised. Any easter eggs I need to be aware of?

      Re: Santa came early!

Look under the hood of the car and it'll tell you to do the timing belt every 120k km's, but most people recommend doing it every 100k or so. Especially if it's chipped and running greater than stock power. I would say that it's FAR cheaper and not overly pre-mature to get it done while the seal is getting done. You'll pay very little extra in labour.

You can see what you're boost is doing with VAG, but the boost gauge is definitely a good idea. It's better to have a boost gauge all the time and be able to see if you are making proper vacuum, boost, etc and not just from time to time when you VAG the car. It's an invaluable tool in maintaining and diagnosing the car, not to mention tuning it!

There are some easter eggs hidden in your climate control screen search on Audiworld for the full wirte up but i am not sure that boost is one of the eggs you can find but there is about 100 eggs in that basket.

            Re: Santa came early!

i did my timing belt around 110k. it's more of a peace of mind, when i was reading through from aw and az about when to change the TB it ranged from 90k-150k. it's a resistance engine so if it breaks there's a lot of work that will have to be done.

and if the front end is being taken off, run over to concept1 and get a snub mount. george will put it on when he puts the front end back together, i forgot this when he did the TB on my car

yea if your getting the timing belt done since the front end is off do the following mods i'm doing them when i get mine done

              RS4 or awe ICs
              samco hoses
apr bipipe (already did this but pita with bumper on)
lightweight pullies (if you feel the need)
              timing belt (most obviious haha)
snub mount (better shifty) but no go on a tip i think

                Re: Santa came early!

Meh, you dont need the front end off for IC's or hoses! And from what I have read.. pulleys are negligible.

                  Re: Santa came early!

Heh, the thing about a new car / engine is there's a lot of new stuff to learn. Terminology, etc. And I had finally figured my 1.8t out...

Spent some time on the AW / AZ noob pages, and there's a wealth of info there, but I think I need a remedial class!

Someone should start a pool about how long I can wait before I swap out my stock ECU for the OC.T one that's sitting in a box in my garage. I'm thinking "spring", but I don't know...

You mean it's an interference engine, right? Sorry for the anal correction, carry on

yea i just gotta figure if i want to do RS4 ICs or AWE ones.. they seem to be the same price pretty much and the AWE's are mo bigger.. meh i'll see when the time comes i spose.. coils and wheels first before ICs..

on a plus i filled up with 94 today.. damnit this car is fast on a 93 program..

                              LOL, yeah I love 94. It's all I use!

The RS4 IC's can be had for significantly less money than the AWE IC's, and for K04 or smaller applications are typically all that is needed, especially in the Canadian arctic

If you have spare change laying around, the AWE's/IPP's/ER's, etc won't hurt anything, that's for sure
