  • So has anybody really figured out how to disable (Audi S4) DTR lights?

When installing an HID kit it's obviously a good idea to disable the day time running lights (voltage is too low for the ballasts, I've burned out 2 because of that). So has anybody here done that? What did you have to do?

Its a matter of removing fuses under the dash.... had it done on my A4, but dont remember which ones... AW should have good write-ups.. I think it was MarkP who had a good one? Also check EdY's dictionary.
Can be as simple as removing one fuse.. or a bit more complicated with jumpers to run city lights..

I looked into the fuse pulling and tried it out and it didn't seem to do the trick in my car. I'll look around for that write-up and maybe get some ideas.

I'm not sure if we can use VAG com to re-code the lights like that. I'll check into that.
Thanks for the ideas guys, keep 'em coming!

Its the BIG fuses/relays under the steering wheel/footwell.. not any small fuses on the side of the dash. Once you remove the footwell cover, you will see several large fuses/relays... I just cant remember which one it is you remove.

From the Audiworld tech section article:

This FAQ will show you how to disable the Daytime Running Light system built-in (by law) on Canadian A4's. Please note that this procedure is illegal for vehicles used on public roads in Canada. The FAQ does not in any way endorse this procedure, it merely provides the information for anyone who may be interested.

First, remove the lower panel underneath the dash on the driver's side. This procedure is decribed in a seperate article written by Dan Masi if you need instructions. From this point on, there are three options that you can choose from.

Option one, Simply remove the relay (214) from position #8 (as printed on the relay panel). This will prevent the corner lamps and the taillights from coming on as soon as the ignition is turned to the on position. This option will still leave the headlight portion of your DRL system operational (like most other DRL systems), thus it would still be considered legal in Canada.

Option two will disable your headlights, and leave your corner lamps and taillights to come on when the iginition is turned to the on position. First you need to make a jumper. Take two spade connectors and connect them with a very short piece of solid (as opposed to liquid?) automotive electrical wire. Second, pull out the relay (209) from position #9. Take note where contacts A and B are on the relay, and place the jumper you've just made across the sockets where contacts A and B would have been. You must use the jumper in order for the headlights to remain operational. Although the new Dodge Caravan/Plymoth Voyager incorporate only their corner lamps as their DRL system, I'm not sure of the legality of option two for the A4 on Canadian roads.

Option three is definately illegal. It will completely disable your DRL system. Perform both option one and option two, and the entire system is disabled.

Disclaimer - The electrical system in any automobile is highly sensitive. I did the jumper wire method on mine...I don't remember what gauge I used, but I don't think it really matters either. Super easy to do, only took about 10 minutes.

It really doesn't matter as long as it passes current. Normal speaker wire will work just fine.

and BTW, last night I soldered up a jumper with a spade connector on either end, and I'm about to go outside right now and do this thing.

Took 8 min 20 sec (and that's with numb hands, friggin bitter cold wind)

When I first tried screwing around with it, people were saying it was the fuse that needed to be removed, which didn't make a lot of sense to me. Makes alot more sense being a relay that needs to be jumped.
