Burnt Audi R8 revealed to be twin-turbo V10 RS8 mule

Quattro GmbH director Wener Frowein has revealed that the Audi R8 prototypes destroyed by fire earlier this year — three in all — were RS8 test mules fitted with the same 580 horsepower twin-turbo V10 found in the Audi RS6 Avant.

However, the twin-turbos created too much heat for the mid-engine setup, causing the engine to overheat and catch fire. Frowein also revealed that Audi has since abandoned the twin-turbo setup, opting for a naturally aspirated V10 rated at about 500 horsepower.

No word on when we will see the V10-powered RS8, but a January debut at the Detroit Auto Show has not been ruled out.

There will be a form of the R8 at the Detroit Autoshow in January but it will more likely be the roadster version.

Curious to see how much more the V10 will be over the regular R8 for about 100 more hp.

Just a shame it's not going to get any forced induction, I really think the TT V-10 on the new RS6 would have been the powerplant to use, they just should of went the way of the Veyron and added 20 radiators.

          Good news everyone!

"After a few RS8's went up like popcorn while testing with the twin-turbo V10 from the RS6, Evo magazine bolsters our report from yesterday that the new supeR8 will come with a normally aspirated V10. However, it will be a clean-sheet-of-paper engine, and not related to the V10s in the RS6 or Lamborghini Gallardo, but rather an evolution of the V8 in the RS4."
