    and this:

    http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/n...s/Audi_A4.html

notice anything? look at the S4 prices obviously in Cnd vs US dollars....

about 23,000 less in the US... the thing is, is that the US dollar is just about even with the Canadian dollar right now or soon will be. So you could save 23,000 dollars on a new S4 if you imported it...

Theres a few people I work with looking at corvettes in the US right now... same story.

On that note, how difficult is it to import a brand new US bought car?

yes, 6% duty...but you still have to pay GST as well...so add another 6%. Plus shipping, import fees, inspection (you need this even on a brand new car), and registration. You may save a bit in the end, but there is a lot of work to do...trust me...

                Re: Holy Crapola!

There is a procedure to bring a car up from the US, first it has to be on the admissible list. Then you have do paper work, bring it up, pay duty (depending on where the car is actually built) and GST, so probably about 12% total if the car was made outside of N. America and then pass inspection here to get it registered.

This is becoming a huge issue as our costs are based on on times of 20-30% difference when now we are under 10% so on some pricey cars this can be a huge difference. I think dealers here will start to feel the pinch but the companies may not care as they are still selling cars. You also have to remember you can't finance a car this way you will have to pay in full!

oh, and if the vehicle is manufactured in NA (even if it's German made ie. VW)...you don't have to pay the duty...

I was thinking of a line of credit, wouldn't be considered financing the car... Even adding 12% it's still quite a steal

Yes even with 12% it is worth effort in many cases, especially as the cars get more expensive, think of an RS4 is $66,000 US, at 1.07 exchange rate that is $70,600 and our list price is $94,200, thats over 23 grand to work with. Add 12% thats 79,000 and here you would almost 100 with GST so still up nearly 21,000, which in effect allows you to buy an American RS4 for the price of a Canadian S4

Well I was just giving some leeway as the banks always markup when you actually buy based on the real rates, as the Royal Bank would actually charge you a rate of 1.0677 to buy US money today.

And yes it is very tempting, I am eagerly awaiting to see what 2008 cars will and will not be allowed into Canada.
