  • b5 S4 guys help needed

driving around today my engine started to sputter a little and i noticed a huge drain in power. the check engine light turned on too. got home, turned the car off and it smelt like rotten eggs from the exhaust. scaned it,
    16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    16685 - Cyl.1 Misfire Detected
    16688 - Cyl.4 Misfire Detected
just started looking up what i should be doing. any advice along the way would be greatly appreciated.

Try pulling and switching the location of the coil packs and re-scan it.

The old man figures it could be a faulty ignition module, if you run a block check to see how many times each of those cylinders registered a misfire, he thinks you could find the culprit. So if a block check shows that one cylinder has misfired multiple times compared to once or twice for the other cylinder the one with multiple misfires would be the problem. (Cylinder 4 might have just been trying to compensate for the loss of cylinder 1 or vice-versa) Your rotten eggs sounds like gas that flowed into the cats possibly. Good luck!

so which block should i be logging? i can't even figure out how to get to the coil packs right now. i was taking bits and pieces off, and my dad comes in, so i decided to start it so he can hear it..... nothing. the engine sounds fine. i cleared the codes, slapped the pieces back on and took it for a spin. my dad was also thinking the rotten eggs smell is probably unburnt fuel too, so i'll take the two ppl saying that as it's ok! thanks guys!!!

yeah i spoke too soon... i started the car tonight and it's still sputtering. do you think bad gas might be causing this? i've also tried looking around on az and aw for a write up but i need some more picture friendly versions. i can't seem to find the coils. how far do i need to dig down to get to them?

they sit on top of the engine.. remove the covers kinda square black things 3 on each side. .a quick az/aw search should give you the low down

1 and 4 are on opposing banks at the bumper I believe. 1 on pass. side, check out the coils but they seem to bee fairly reliable in these cars, it usually seems to be the ignition module controlling them that craps out. The modules are located on the airbox.

Try doing what I said with the coil packs, I know of multiple people who had a similar problem and the culprit was a coil pack or two.

i sure hope so, i'll be trying that tonight. a guy on beyond.ca said that autovalue can check coils to see if they are good. so that might make it even easier.

and the fun continues. tried interchanging the coil and the misfire was still on cylinder 4. tried interchanging the spark plugs, same thing. the real question is front cylinder on the drivers side, is that number 4 or not?
