  • BMW Questions...

Need some education on the 318i, 323i and 328i Sedans.

From what I've read online I see that a 4 cylinder engine was available in the 318i's. Is there a 4 banger that was sold in the 323 and the 328's? Also how reliable are the engines and what milage is "high" for them? Being a RWD, how do they perform on the streets of Calgary in the winters, any reliability issues, things that generally can and do go wrong with them? personal experiences?

I've been looking on Canadatrader and seeing a lot of 1998 BMW's with around 150,000 kms. Any major services due at this mileage. Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm considering buying one in the summer and looking at the 1998-1999 year models in particular.

    Thanks!

You're looking at the last 2 years of the E36 I think.

114hp 318i is the M42 engine. The 318i is probably a bit slow considering the weight of a german sedan.

    170hp and 193hp 323i and 328i are based on the M52 engine. Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995 through 1998.

Personally I would say... good car.

      BMW 1999 323i (E46) owner, Manual, 117,000km’s.
Love the car, summer time, its just a blast to drive.

During winter it’s a different story. It’s an “adventure”. I remember when it was icy on the roads one day, I was stopped, trying to go forward, I was in 1st gear, couldn't move, traction control was kicking in every time I tried, went into 2nd, and eventually went forward. Some lady behind me in a ford focus got fed up and passed me. I tried to catch up, couldn’t. TRACTION CONTROL!!!!. Lots of slow starts, but that’s winter for you. Doesn’t help to have all season tires.

Minor issues/random issues with the car though.
Once in a while my right front turn signal dies on me (it’s not burned out). Air bag light came on, reset it, and hasn’t come on again. Little problems like that, nothing major.

Engine runs great, no major problems in this department.

      GREAT car, fun to drive.

Traction in the winter time is my concern as well. I test drove a 98 328i b4 I bought my VW, great power but at that time I shied away from it b/c it was a RWD. I don't know how much winter tires will help.
        How is it on gas?

I have a 96 328I with traction control. My friend has a big ford truck. He has to go around the block to make it up a hill in the winter. Myself I drive right up it like it was nothing. The traction control to me is a must have for a car here in Calgary. Its amazing. by the way I may sell my car this spring. just thought i'd mention it.
