  • Gti / A3 / 328?

    Okay, well some of you may have noticed that I am selling my GTI, its listed in both the autotrader and on one of the forums here. Anyways, I'm selling it to pick up something newer and here is what I'm considering;

-2007 GTI w/ DSG... I really like the new GTIs and I think I may even be tempted to get the DSG, they're sporty, quick, and very tunable.

-2007 A3- I know its pretty much a GTI in Audi clothes, but they're a bit bigger, I think they sit a bit lower, and I might be willing to pay the bit extra for the four rings... that being said if it were between the GTI and the A3 I think I would go for the A3.

    Or....

    - 2007 BMW 328 Coupe, noticably more $$$, but I think you really do get your value in this one, its a car I can see myself holding onto a bit longer, you don't pay for maint for the 4 years its under warranty, and I just think the coupe is a beautiful car. The only option I'd get is the Montego Blue Metallic paint job.

Anyways, anyone have any input? I'm really on the fence here and I am value conscious, the Bimmer is a bit of a stretch, but I'm willing to go for it if its worth it... I think I'm really just on the fence between GTI and the 328 (the financing on GTI's right now is brutal). I know the Bimmer isn't too much quicker, but obviously its not just about that. I've only test driven the VW so far but I'm already tempted with the 328 just looking at it and looking at the specs.

Wow tough choice! Ive honestly always found newer (post 99) coupe beamers, besides the m3 and 6 series, to be kinda girly. Im not certain why exactly, and really I dont drive a beamer so I don't think Im one to talk. Haha plus I drive an MK4 and a lot ppl think those are girly hah so again I probably shouldnt talk.

For me though Id go MK5 GTI, so sporty, like you say easy to tune, and cheaper, but then you dont get a audi or bmw badge so thats always a draw back. Good luck though

The only thing I would consider if I were in your place is would you be regretting not getting the 335 a few years down the road. 328 is nice but 335 (even though 10K more) is a real monster. If you can somewho afford it go for that. If not I would go for the Gti, until I could afford a 335.

well the GTI and A3 are very similair i'd still get a 3.2dsg A3 over a GTI i think.. but the 328 is in another league..

but the 2.0t is a very good engine to mod.. if your looking to mod i'd say go GTI.. if minor mods 3.2dsg A3..

if you just have cash 328.. but then again yes you'll be cursing you didn't get a 330 or 335

            Re: Gti / A3 / 328?

Decisions... I thought about the S3, but there is so much uncertainty as to when or if it'll be here is there not?

YEah the 335 is an incredible car, I was on the bimmerforums and reading some of the kill stories against Mustangs and the lot. Its too much of a stretch financially though,I figure maybe that'll be he car for me a few years from now. BMW also has this program called Owner's Choice where you basically finance your car but with a ballooon payment at the end of term, which would make the 335 a possibility, but I think rationality will have to prevail and it would have to be the 328 if anyhting. Once with it I don't think I'd be doing any modding to it, I'd be too afraid to mess something up and its a BMW after all.

But I've got a MKIV right now and I love it, so maybe it'll come down to the test drives between the BMW and VW. I think I've ruled out the A3 now...

In any event I'll certainly be posting pics, if I'm posting pics in the next month or so it'll be a GTI... if you don't see any pics till May then it'll be the new Montego Blue Bavarian in my garage.

Do your self a favor and test drive the BMW, that will make up your mind for sure. Go for the bimmer.

Perhaps I'm biased towards my A3, but I don't think I would go for the 328. Like someone mentioned before, you'll be kicking yourself for not going with the 330 or even 335.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the e90's, although they perform fairly well. The exterior is alright, but the interior is weak IMHO.

                  Re: Gti / A3 / 328?

BMW dropped 330 and moved to 335.
328 received down graded powerplant from 330 or upgraded version from 325.

                  06 325 had 3.0L 215hp/185lb
                  06 330 had 3.0L 255hp/220lb
                  07 328 has 3.0L 230hp/200lb

I would choose between A3 and 328. VW doesn't have lexury of Audi and BMW. I would love to drive A3, but fact that I don't like FWD, I choose BMW.

                      Re: Gti / A3 / 328?

Right, on some of the other forums I've read about dead turbos on the 335, and I'm sure its a disproportionately low number of vehicles that happens to, but given that BMW has only been using turbos on that kind of app for so long I'm not too sure. That and the money thing.

Like White46 mentioned, not a whole lot of difference between the 328 and the 330, I think the hp difference translates into one or two tenths of a second on the 0-60 times. And I guess there wouldn't even be an E92 Coupe 325/330 because this is model year is the first one for the E92 coupe .

Now this is going to sound a little crazy, but does anyone have any thoughts on the Infiniti G Sedan?... for just short of $40K you can get a 3.5 L V6 w/ 306hp and 268 lb ft of torque. (Thats A3 pricing territory with 335 performance) I read in Car and Driver that the handling isn't up to the bimmers yet, but its getting there. Even with the AWD its still only a little over 43k and the financing rates are much better... I wouldn't be much of a eurodriver so I'd be an exile from here however.... I'd have to go to beyond.ca or something... *shudder*

G35 is the sensible choice. IMO the NEW interior is nicer than the bimmer. You get the 300+ hp for 10 grand less. Features are also all there. The only thing you are not getting is the name. Doubt many people on here could drive the two cars to the point of telling a handling difference between the two on a daily basis in the city.

Drive the G. if you compare it to the 328 I am sure you'll go with the infiniti.

yea, the G35's are nice, and wouldn't blame you for getting one but I just can't deal with the styling of the sedan, I just can't like it no matter how hard I try. The coupe however is still incredibly hot to me, one of hottest cars out there right now. Plus you get really nice specs and rwd.

I think for me it would be tough call between the A3 and GTI. I love the A3 and it's an "Audi" but the GTI has really nice styling (I actually like it more now) and is cheaper than the A3.

I don't even look unless it has AWD on it so my choices are a bit simpler, so why not a 3.2 A3?
