You'll have to make compromises if you want to save some money.
There are of course good compromises to be had, both in the new and used market. Its tricky though. Picking up a used set and looking at powder coating and/or refinishing is not a bad idea. Neither is driving down to the border.
Rial Daytona Race are a nice 2 piece mesh wheel with a nice lip for not a lot of money.
DTM Kreuz wheels always seem to be for sale on the vortex, I you could definitely look at a refinishing job and make a worn out wheel look great.
Those iForged wheels posted earlier were a pretty decent price on the used market on vortex.
Well if it interests you at all.. I am thinking about getting rid of my Oetinger RE's... but they aren't in the best shape.. 3/4 have some rash. they are 32 or 35 offset.. so they would need some spacers to fit properly
Also something to keep in mind, if you get a real 2/3 piece wheel, you can keep the center part and get a new barrel, change the offset, etc. So if someone is selling like bent curbed lip wheels for nothing, and you don't mind waiting to have them redone, you could maybe do that.

From what I understand spacers wouldn't help because they only reduce the offset. I think I need them to stick out less (more positive offset), so I think I actually have to buy wheels that are like ET45 or something like that (depends on width... i've read ET45 for 8" wide is pretty widely used for aftermarket A3 wheels... and even then there is a little rubbing)
Chris: Similar to the Schmidts I already posted, definitely cool as are the brake calipers.
Billip: Run a slightly stretched tire and you'll be fine with rubbing, you could also roll the fenders or have someone do it to get that extra quarter inch or whatever. You don't really slam your car into full lock turns anyway do you?
